The original english version of Counter-Strike was 18+. In Germany the version that was available in regular (non-online/offline) shops, was a slightly censored one that is 16+. The reason why ANY game is 18+, is usually because of violent content. Should you confront yourself with voilent content regularly? No, of course you should'nt, but even just by watching any random news channel you do. Can an emotionally healthy person cope with voilence that is displayed infront of him/her? To a degree, I believe we can. We see how hurricanes, earthquakes, bullets and explosives destroy human lives. Does that cripple us emotionally?

It was said, that the game trains people to kill. Since I have never killed, but I have played Counter-Strike, I cannot truly compare. Did it teach me how to use a rifle/gun? No. I have no idea how to use a rifle, how to arm one or what to do when it gets jammed. Sure, as everyone else on this planet, I could pull the trigger... but I haven't learned that from the game.
Does it prepare you how to cope with the fact that you are ENDING a human life? How could it? How could anything on earth explain what you will/should feel or prepare emotionally you for killing?

In chess, there is black and there is white. The different colors are used to make a difference between the figures. In Counter-Strike there are two opposing sides. Like in most games, they made the characters different. In the game's perspective it is usually NOT of importance on which side you are, since you frequently (and more important automatically) switch sides. You don't actually kill a person representing that side. You press your mouse button, which changes the pixels displayed on your monitor. Usually, people know what is real and what isn't by the time they reach adulthood. In Counter-Strike you don't kill anyone. The worst thing you can do is make red pixels come out of a bunch of pixels that looks like a body. Does THAT teach me how to kill? Does it prepare me, train me? I highly doubt it, I probably couldn't even properly shoulder a rifle (speaking of that, some rifles are held exactly in line of the stomache, which I learned later in some random detective serial ON TV, would injure the person wielding the rifle).

There are two problems, in my view. The first one is that 17 year olds have access to guns, and 18+ games. Both are for adults, like other "products", hence 18+. They were made to be used by an adult mind.
The second problem is solving WHY one would massacare 15 people, or even kill ONE SINGLE person. If it was JUST the gun access, half of America would be dead. If it was only the "how"... It's of course the "why". Why would you want to kill a human being?

What could a game possibly have for a message to make people want to kill civilians, if the "targets" in the game are for example Terrorists, SWAT/SAS members (listed both, since the sides ARE switched, as written above)? Or is it possible that it was not just only the game. Im not sure how many copies of Counter-Strike were sold, but if every person who ever bought a copy would've went on a killing-spree, we would've seen alot more of it on the news (and usually such incidents are reported).

If not the game what then? Well, it has to be something that sorrounds the person. Some people are in fact aggressive then others, thanks their genes. But not that much. If it is something that sorrounds a 17 year old, that builds so much hate inside him/her, what could it be? In Tim Kretschmer's case, I would like to quote wikipedia (since some of you already have, I thought it would be somewhat of a good source for information):

His failing grades had prevented him from an apprenticeship so he attended a commercial high school (Donner + Kern) in Waiblingen as a preparation for an apprenticeship for a commercial career. Kretschmer was described by a friend as "a lonely and frustrated person who felt rejected by society". An anonymous friend described Kretschmer as a quiet student who began to withdraw from his peers.

He was an avid table tennis player and had hoped to become a professional player. Marko Habijanec, a Croatian table tennis player who coached Kretschmer at the Erdmannhausen sports club between 2000 and 2003, remembers him as being "a bit spoiled", his mother fulfilling many of his demands. According to Habijanec, Kretschmer had great difficulties accepting defeat: he would have a temper tantrum, yelling and throwing his racket. Having a high opinion of his own abilities, Kretschmer openly denigrated his teammates. When Habijanec discussed Tim's attitude with his mother, he was at disbelief to discover her siding fully with her son.

Media reports say he enjoyed playing the video game Counter-Strike and playing with airsoft guns. However, commentators also noted that "game addiction is a symptom of something wrong and not a cause". He also shot his guns in the forest behind his home and also in the basement of his house.


Kretschmer did not have a criminal record. The press reported that in 2008, Kretschmer had received treatment as an in-patient at the Weissenhoff Psychiatric Clinic near the town of Heilbronn and that after being discharged, Kretschmer was supposed to continue his treatment as an out-patient in Winnenden, but ended his treatment. According to police and clinic staff, he had been treated repeatedly for clinical on an out-patient basis in 2008. His family rejected these claims and maintained that he never received psychiatric treatment. According to a psychiatric report prepared for the prosecutor's office, Kretschmer met five times with a therapist and talked about his growing anger and violent urges; the therapist then informed Kretschmer's parents.

Three weeks before the shooting he had written a letter to his parents, saying that he was suffering and couldn't go on.

If put together, I get the following picture of this boy:
He was raised mostly by his mother, who spoiled him. He never really learned what "defeat" really was. He probably had his mothers stuck-up personality, since she raised him, which made him unpopular with everyone around him. He got frustrated of not having friends, possibly not understanding the reason. He found out that he could make "freinds" online, thus began playing Counter-Strike. Due to excessive playing, his grades got worse, which might have tossed him into depression, since he couldn't handle defeat. He had no real friends who could've pulled him out of it, so he surpressed his depression. After being brought to ha psychiatric clinic, his parents were dissapointed in him. By admitting that something was wrong with the child, the mother would've had to admit that the way she raised her wasn't perfect (and since that would've meant defeat for her, she just neglected the problem). At this point, Tim Kretschner had no friends, a family that practially denied him and no sight of any career, due to his bad grades.

He wasn't tought to seek out help, he was tought that he was supreme. And, as in many cases, he thought he needed a scapegoat. He chose his classmates, who most likely mocked him. After believing that it was their fault, and of course the teacher's who gave him bad grades, he was obviously blinded by his hate and decided to "end it all".
