Why would anyone believe Christ's temporary death was a sacrifice made for the sake of redemption if they didn't first know they needed redeeming? Until someone understands their sin, they cannot know they are guilty. Until someone knows they are guilty, they cannot recognize the need for the debt to be paid. Until they know who paid the debt and why, they cannot come to Christ and confess their lifetime of sins, and grovel for forgiveness appropriately. It is a particular kind of love that seeks to help prevent eternal damnation.
