Pastor Martin Ssempa supports Bahati's Anti-Homosexuality Bill
In support of Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill, Pastor Martin Ssempa of Kampala wanted to make a loud and clear statement that tough penalties are needed against homosexuals in Uganda. So, he decided to show graphic images of people having hardcore gay sex to an invited audience at a press conference that included his two sons, according to The Daily Monitor.
Most of the audience walked out, some of them in tears.
It's a shame, because the whole point of Ssempa's presentation was to prove that gays can be "cured".
As evidence, he had on hand two Ugandans who claimed they were former homosexuals who had been rehabilitated. Paul Kagaba and Sandrah Baggotte, who both claimed to be reformed homosexuals, or "ex-gays", said, "David Bahati is a hero" for drafting the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which would impose life imprisonment or death upon those convicted of a new crime the bill would create called "aggravated homosexuality".
Unfortunately, Kagaba and Baggotte's testimonials went mostly unheard because of Pastor Ssempa's earlier decision to purge his already sympathetic audience by showing them pictures of hardcore gay sex he had downloaded from the Internet.
Apparently, Ssempa, who has ties to U.S. Rev. Rick Warren, wondered aloud why he was being persecuted.
What is amazing is that Bahati's Anti-Homosexuality Bill is still on the table in Uganda, despite international condemnation and Ugandan President Museveni's recent proclamation that the bill has become a matter of foreign policy, i.e., that foreign investment into Uganda will cease if the bill passes. However, even after meeting with Museveni and his cabinet, Bahati remains firm in his commitment to the bill.
The crux of the Anti-Homosexuality legislation seems to be protecting Ugandan children from being "recruited" into the homosexual "lifestyle". Can Bahati produce even one child who has been successfully recruited into homosexuality? Where is this child? Sure, Ssempa dragged out two so-called "ex-gays", but they didn't claim to have been recruited into homosexuality as children. The core argument has absolutely no merit.
It seems that no matter the outcome of the vote on the Bahati Bill, given the persistence of Bahati et. al. in pursuing this legislation, the damage has already been done in Uganda on the world stage. The dark underbelly of unfathomable hate and bigotry has been exposed, and whether or not Uganda can ever be trusted on human rights issues is a big "if" at this point.
