Child, Two Others Critically Injured, 90 Hospitalized After Magnitude 6.0 South Napa Quake
NAPA (KRON) — At least three people including a child are critically injured after Sunday morning’s magnitude 6.0 quake that hit in the American Canyon area and caused significant damage in Napa.
Officials say the child was hurt when a chimney collapsed immediately following the strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay Area at 3:20 Sunday morning.
“City Fire personnel are responding to structure fires,” City of Napa spokesman Barry Martin says in a written statement. “A number of unreinforced masonry buildings in downtown Napa have suffered severe damage. Many store windows are broken. There are water main breaks in a variety of locations. The City has opened an Emergency Operations Center and will issue further information shortly after a 6:30 briefing.”
At least 90 people are receiving treatment at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, mostly from lacerations and bruises. A hospital spokeswoman tells KRON 4′s Marty Gonzalez at least one patient has a fractured hip.
PG&E says 30,000 customers were without power by about 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The jolt was centered about 4 miles northwest of American Canyon but it was felt widely across the Bay Area. Social media reactions indicate that the quake was felt as far as Sacramento and in the Silicon Valley.
Major damage is being reported at the historic Sam Kee Laundry Building, also known as the Pfeiffer Building, at 1245 Main St. in Napa. Images from the scene shows that a portion of the building has collapsed.
There was no immediate report of injuries.
The California Highway Patrol has closed the westbound off-ramp of state Highway 37 and westbound Interstate Highway 80 to state Highway 37
due to possible damage.
Residents in Napa County are reporting damage and power outages.

The CHP is reporting that there is no visible damage to Bay Area bridges and they remain open as they continue to be checked.
Reports of several power outages in Sonoma County. The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety is reporting multiple power outages and alarms but hasn’t had reports of any major injuries or damage.
The San Francisco Police Department hasn’t had any reports of damage in San Francisco.
In the East Bay, Cordelia resident Alison Chavez posted on KRON 4′s Facebook page that “…a few things fell but not bad considering we are maybe 10 miles from the epicenter.”
The USGS web site says that the probability of a “strong and possibly damaging aftershock IN THE NEXT 7 DAYS is approximately 54 PERCENT.”
A 2.5 magnitude aftershock has been reported this morning near American Canyon following a 6.0 magnitude earthquake, according to the U.S.
Geological Survey. The aftershock occurred at 5:01 a.m.
On Saturday, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the region around Valparaiso, Chile, according to the USGS.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage from the strong quake that occurred at 10:32 p.m., but electricity and telephone service was interrupted in some areas. Three aftershocks were registered in the area shortly thereafter.
In 2010, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake several miles offshore of Humboldt County caused damage to numerous structures and left about 28,000 people without power in Eureka and surrounding areas.
