I guess you're lucky that while you were born in a liberal household, at least it was not a scientifically inclined household - they would have brainwashed you to doubt every truth, and to look for explanations best suiting existing evidence rather than for the truth. It's really difficult to make these scientific types let go of their empirical evidence stuff and accept the fact that there is an Absolute Truth. Well, God did not create Hell for it to stay empty, he made it for these scientific type fools:
1 Corinthians 3:18-20
18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
