Hi everybody

I'm an Irish-American med student currently having a gap year in Europe (mainly Ireland, 'course, but I'm now enjoying the beginning of french summer).

Why Ovaltine ? cuz I love it. Real name Andy.

Religion ? Catholic.
So why did I register here ? Call it "post-Pentecost syndrome". This is where you try to understand why people chose other religions. Blame it on to the sermon I heard if you don't like my being here.

For now, I'll go to bed, it's getting quite late here.

Ovaltine, my parents were Catholics, too.

Unlike you, I was extremely fortunate. When I was still at the tender age of five, my Papist parents were killed by a runaway threshing machine on the streets of Chicago. So, I didn't get thoroughly corrupted by Mary-worship. Instead, I was taken in at an orphanage run by Christian women, and raised up to follow Jesus!

Would you like to get to know Jesus, too?

@ Ezekiel Bathfire : I certainly didn't register here to try to convince you of my religious point of view (which would be quite useless besides being rude, too), so rest assured that I won't speak of my religion unless asked to. I came here to try to understand why a different religion would make some people, who don't even know each other, hate each other throughoutly.

@ Capt. A. Portway : I'm sad to find such a lack of an open mind in your post ; I truly hope I missed somewhere the signs that said "this is my being humourous, guys, don't take it litteraly". Well, to give you a decent reply in the remote probability you were being serious about it. I'm Irish-American, that's a fact ; it's neither something to be proud of or to be ashamed of. My mother's from Belfast, nothing's going to change that. She moved to the States in the 70's because she was bored with the way people behaved there, and I'm glad I grew up in New Jersey instead of a war-field. As for my opinion on science and evolution, I suppose that if the Lord gave us a mind able to think, it was probably because He wished us to use it — and not using it at all might be a worse sin than figuring scientifical facts the wrong way. That's my humble opinion ; I totally understand that you may think otherwise. About my gap year, now. I went to Ireland to see my family ; it had been years since we had last spent some time together, and I was eager to see them all again. Didn't go much to pubs, though ; I don't enjoy drinking too much anyway. I went to France for two major reasons ; first, I wanted to visit Paris. I stayed a month there and enjoyed every day of it ; I think it's a very beautiful city. The second reason was to go to the Alps, even though the skiing season is nearly over. I've been in Grenoble for three weeks now ; it's quite warm, and the scenery's stunning.

@ JennyD : How tragic you have to rejoice of your parents' death. I could never bring myself to think there can be room for joy, or even mere relief, when a human being dies. Doesn't the Lord teach us to love our neighbor, whatever their faults may be ? Well, I guess you count your blessings in a different way, but I'd like to know more about it. I didn't come here to know Jesus, as you say ; I'm quite happy with my idea of religion, and don't feel the need to change it. However, if you can accept in this forum someone you believe is doomed to the pits of Hell, I'd like to understand what makes us different, and why it has lead in the past in such atrocities.

Your question is answered simply; if you see a soul on the broad path to Hell, is it not one’s duty to save him? Can a soul be saved other than through God via Landover? No. (Except a woman in childbirth of course – but that may be (a) the only way a woman may be saved and (b) a topic for another day.)

I’d ask you to consider your position as a minion of the anti-Christ, the vicar of Rome, but, bearing in mind you are in Ireland, that would be akin to asking an alcoholic to stop drinking when he is at a brewery.

Now really, I must question where it states In the Bible of course that a woman can only be saved through childbirth AND your statement that a soul can only be saved by God via Landover, because I don't recall anywhere in my Bible (King James Bible) that it mentions Landover in there anywhere.

Furthermore I must state that I don't recall anywhere in the Bible that it says to reach people with bitterness, anger and strife because as I recall it states in the Bible that those are demonic spirits.

So then one must answer this question, The Bible states that the fruits of the spirit are NOT: Galatians 5: 18-23

18But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.


19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Hmmm... It seems to me that you guys fit that boot smoothly like Cinderella fit that glass slipper, buddy.

We get quite a few people like you on our forum Andy. You, and others like you, seem to think of their religion as a sort of security blanket/social club. What I mean is, people like you think that religion is for YOU. Something to make you feel better, something to do on Sunday.

People like you think of church as a place where you and your family can get together with other families, talk about how your week has been, things like that.

But that is not what religion is at all. God created the world. He wrote a book called the Bible where he told people how to live and how to worship Him. The Bible is a really a book of laws. And God expects us to follow those laws. Not just some of them, ALL of them.

People say things like "We should respect other peoples religion" as if religion is something that people created. God created everything. Over thousands of years, most people have strayed from God, perverting His words, ignoring some, most, or all of the Bible.

But we haven't. Here at Landover, we follow EVERY WORD of the King James Bible. We honor God all day, every day.

You call yourself religious. In reality, you are not religious at all, because you are not worshipping God correctly. Do I "respect" your right to not worship God correctly? I guess in a way I do. As far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever you want. But it is not me that you need to worry about. You need to worry about what God thinks about you not worshipping Him correctly.

@ Ezekiel Bathfire : I perfectly get your point of doing whatever is in one's power to save people ; it honors you. However, what I fail to grasp is why you so firmly believe only those from your Church will be saved. As long as someone abides by the moral principles of the Scriptures, and in particular those of the Gospels, why shouldn't he be considered righteous, whatever his or her particular religion (or lack of) ?
Besides, I am catholic and you're baptist ; our faiths should be close. Don't we both believe in the Holy Scriptures ? Don't we both believe God sent his Son to save us ? So why should we be unable to be both saved and, just as importantly, live peacefully one beside the other, aknowledging that, perhaps, the other is just as right as we are ? The Scriptures teach us, above everything else, tolerance, and the love for our neighbor. See, some of my family died in Belfast because people wouldn't live quietly together. Without, of course, comparing you in the slightest way with theses bombers (whatever their faith, they can't be excused), it's important for me to understand why catholics and hard-wing protestants just can't seem to get on.

As for my being Irish, thanks, but I consider myself as American, Irish being only my descent. As for my criticising the Pope, I have enough judgement to do it by myself without resorting to insults, and to see that the Catholic Church as a whole did a bunch of good things in the world (together with some nasty others such as Crusades, but nobody's perfect, only the Lord is).

@ Professor Bessemer : my religion isn't about "just going to church on sunday". I try to live it fully — that's one of the reasons I'm a medical student, for example. I won't bother you by shouting I am religious and you're a moron, like I've seen in other threads. Facts like faith shouldn't be able to be doubted.

The Bible is a good example. If I aknowledge, as I do, that it is God's word He gave to us, I also have to aknowledge that the Koran also is. I'm not muslim, so I won't try to live by it, but I can't say what they say is rubbish. I'm not so proud that I think my religion is the only right one. Why couldn't God bestow an equal gift, but in a different shape, to other people, who wouldn't have know His word otherwise ?

Ovaltine, you and I need to get into an intelligent debate sometime. I'm not going to derail this thread, but please see my introduction thread. (I did not title it, but it is Mechanix defends paganism, spits on Jesus).

Anyway, I believe much as you do, that God can bestow his gift to different people in different ways. Good luck in here
