You are wrong, but it's an understandable mistake. People who speak the two distinct languages call them "American" or "English". They are quite similar in several ways, which confuses foreigners. If you go to a proper language school in some foreign country to learn what you call "English", then you get the choice of "American English" or "British English". Anyone with any sense chooses American.
I am not biased about this, because I (unfortunately) come from England and have not had the benefit of growing up speaking American. But we are never too old to learn!
