Imam Anwar al-Awlaki corresponded with Nidal Malik Hasan by email in the months leading up to the attack. Speaking to a Yemeni journalist, al-Awlaki said that the attack was a legitimate expression of Muslim faith, that America must be confronted. He conferred his blessing upon the attack, and denounced Muslims who condemned the attack.
