Why did he call a Catholic priest to pray for him? Why specifically someone of that belief since his family was Jewish and went to Lutheran schools?

Just more evidence of his agnosticism.

He knew the Jewish tradition, having been raised in it, and doubted that enough not to call a rabbi.

He knew the Protestant tradition, having been educated by them, and doubted that enough not to call a minister.

So he checked in with the Catholics on a last shot before death (that he really wasn't dealing well with), and doubted that enough to still fear death.

Yet you persist in claiming him an adherent to a religion that guarantees life everlasting, in return for mere belief.

Sweetie, in a single sentence you managed to capture the essence of everything that is wrong with science.

Science is not stable. Science changes all the time. The medicines of yesteryear are seen as a quackery today, and the medicines of today will be seen as quackery in the future. Even worse, science doesn't even strive to achieve Absolute Truth™, and just circles around interpretations derived from available data.

And that fallibility of science is exactly the reason why you should not waste any more time pursuing it, but rather reject all of it and accept the Holy Bible literally, as is, including:

1. Creation of the world and all life in it in six days; Genesis 1:1-31. (It's a long and well-known passage, so I won't quote it).

2. An insightful variation of the Lamarckian view of inheritance of acquired characteristics - in this case, the characteristics are acquired from plants that the animals were looking at the time of engaging in offspring production:

Genesis 30:37-41
37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.

3. The Truth™ about insects having four legs, no more than that:

Leviticus 11:21-22

22 Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.

4. The Truth™ about Sun and Moon being able to stop their daily track around the earth (and whoever told you about the Earth revolving around the Sun, please remember what you said about peer reviewed articles. They are just dead wrong):

Joshua 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

5. The Truth™ about Earth being flat (Job 28:24, Job 38:13, Isaiah 11:12, Revelation 7:1).

6. The Truth™ about unicorns roaming the Earth (Job 39:9-12).

I know, I know. Some of these Biblical Truths™ are a hard pill to swallow. You need to take a deep breath, kill your common sense, and trust God:

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Remember that learning is bad for your health and spiritual wellbeing:

12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

And that was the biggest obstacle for him to be Saved. Smart people with their logic and rational thinking are the problem; believing the Bible with all your heart contrary to logic and rational thinking is the only solution.

Please allow me to answer one of your questions. True Christians(TM) do respect everything that is GOD´s. As for your second question: Your question is implicating something that might not be the case. Are you certain the Christians said gingers where not Homo sapiens or did they state gingers have no soul? These are important differences. Apparently.
