1st April 1957 BBC fools the nation

The BBC has received a mixed reaction to a spoof documentary broadcast this evening about spaghetti crops in Switzerland. The hoax Panorama programme, narrated by distinguished broadcaster Richard Dimbleby, featured a family from Ticino in Switzerland carrying out their annual spaghetti harvest. It showed women carefully plucking strands of spaghetti from a tree and laying them in the sun to dry.

But some viewers failed to see the funny side of the broadcast and criticised the BBC for airing the item on what is supposed to be a serious factual programme. Others, however, were so intrigued they wanted to find out where they could purchase their very own spaghetti bush.

Exotic delicacy

Spaghetti is not a widely-eaten food in the UK and is considered by many as an exotic delicacy.

Mr Dimbleby explained how each year the end of March is a very anxious time for Spaghetti harvesters all over Europe as severe frost can impair the flavour of the spaghetti. He also explained how each strand of spaghetti always grows to the same length thanks to years of hard work by generations of growers.

This is believed to be one of the first times the medium of television has been used to stage an April Fools Day hoax.

Now why did the BBC do such a thing?

His Noodly Appendage influenced some Pastafarians at the BBC to do something that:

1. Reflects our Lords prankish nature, The Flying Spaghetti Monster loves a good joke.
2. Would increase the spaghetti consummation in the UK, as the above show in 1957 Spaghetti was not a widely-eaten food in the UK, but now partly due to the BBC's joke making more people aware of Pasta and leading them to try it spaghetti is now a part of many more meals in the UK.

BBC Television up-until this point had been a rather stuffy organisation with no sense of humour, it then went on to be the broadcaster that gave us That Was The Week That was, Monty Python, The Goodies, Faulty Towers and so many others.

This is also shows us evidence of Pastafarianism long before the birth of the Great Prophet Bobby Henderson.

After reading comments from the bigot "True-Christians" I would renounce my religion as a christian and accept pastafarianism in my life if that wouldn't send me to hell.
However, the beliefs of the "True Christians" here are abhorrent. They justify kidnapping/torture/amputation to make others see the light.
In other words "Believe what we say or well kill you"
It tarnishes the name of Christianity to come across a place like this.
There is a post here of a man burning his wives feet with an iron to keep her from running away...AND THE COMMUNITY EMBRACES IT.
You are all Christians with antiquated beliefs about torture. Go ahead, lets start the crusades all over again. We all know how well that goes. Not to mention when terrorists are suicide bombing infidels with promises of fortune after death, yes that is great for everyone!

The fact is, no one knows heaven or hell exists. It is all speculation as no scientific facts are given regarding this.
Carbon dating has proven the bible is not accurate, yet people still follow it word for word and it leads to people kidnapping and torturing their wives and other loved ones.

The bible is great when you use it as guidelines. Be kind to others, love your mother/father, etc.... I mean it's general morality that should be instilled in all humans, which apparently was never instilled in a lot of you who speak of bigorty against *gasp* non-whites and homosexuals.

Perhaps back in the old days church was law. This is no longer true and the acts of burning your wives feet with an iron/putting rats in a bowl against her stomach and heating the bowl until she passed out from the rats gnawing/using chains and keeping her in the basement/using a cattle prod to keep her in line.
THIS IS ALL ILLEGAL ACTIVITY AND RIGHTFULLY SO

SIX workers drowned after falling into a giant vat of sauce at a tomato sauce factory in India, the Indian Express reported.

The horrifying incident unfolded Wednesday evening when a female worker slipped and fell into the 6m deep tank.

As five colleagues dived in to grab her they were all overcome by fumes given off from fermenting vegetables and drowned, the newspaper said.

Two more workers were in a hospital following the tragic incident at the Akansha Food Products unit in Lucknow, in the Uttar Pradesh region of northeastern India.

Investigators say the woman, named as Usha, was scooping up fermented vegetables from the vat when she slipped off her ladder and plunged into the raw material used to make the sauce.

“When the woman fell in, the other workers jumped in to help her,” said Rajiv Krishna, Lucknow's Senior Superintendent of Police.

The factory owner was taken into custody, the Indian Express said.

Firstly no where does is state those poor people involved in that tragic accident were Pastafarian, it being India they may very well have been Hindu.

Secondly if I was as sick and twisted as the baptists I could take the line that it was divine retribution for heathens messing with a Holy Sauce.

I would not stoop to using a tragic accident for a cheap joke and my sympathy goes out to the families of those involved.

This tragic accident that did not involve any Pastafarians or any Pasta, maybe be it they had been and they had put Pasta in the source they would have been safe.
