Firstly, I was homeschooled, and my father is a devout Christian, so my "math teacher" didn't teach me any of that confusing "pi is a bit more than three, but we can't give you the exact value, since it's got infinite decimals.". If we're approximating it, why don't go with the Biblical value?

Have you ever actually READ God's Word? We are not the ones "making up" rules or whatever you think we do. What does the expression BIBLE BELIEVING CHRISTIAN or BIBLE BELIEVING CHURCH signify to you?

It does mean that. Now if you want to believe something else - many people do believe other things, some of them believe dreadful things - you are free to do so. God tells us, and tells you too if you will listen, that believing other things is an abomination and that if you do believe other things He will send you to hell to be tortured forever. He tells you that because of His Perfect Love, to explain what by yourself you could never work out - because you are imperfect. That is because of sin. God allows us to be redeemed from the certainty of going to hell forever, the condition we are all born into, if sufficient things are killed and their blood squirted over us - but we could never actually kill enough animals and squirt enough blood to atone for our transgressions. Therefore God had Himself murdered at Calvary and squirted His Own Blood onto the ground so that the whole world could be saved.

Notice the word "could" - not everyone will be saved because most people will rely on their own understanding like you are; and if that were sufficient then God would not have needed to give us The Bible, would he.

No woman deserves to be raped. No woman is the property of her father for a rapist to reimburse for his damage. No woman wants to marry her rapist. I don't care what the Bible says! We are better than that!

This thread is about WHAT GOD SAYS TO DO IF your daughter gets raped, and then refuses to marry her rapist, mormon.

For this I got a 100 point infraction which Never expires for "being confused." This just goes to show how arbitrary and authoritarian the infractions on this board are. By this criterion most people here should get numerous infractions for being confused.

You've implied that I'm black and assigned two anti-black sterotypes to me while swearing you are not racist. You have referred to me as a "chanukastani (Canadian) terrorist; I am actually from Nashville, Tennessee. You have had fun changing my name to incorporate "brainless" (false on it's face). You've called me a Satan worshipper, a monkey worshipper, and now a mormon, and you think I'm confused?

Great fun for the believers here. I don't think all the church members believe exactly the same thing and I am appealing to those with a sense of fairness to just pay attention to what I have to say.

I have not read all the posts from the start, but I have read enough to address several recurrent issues in the post. The fact that no woman deserves to be raped stand on its own merits whether anyone claims the contrary or not. The notion that women invite rape is deeply imbedded in our society and several posters have echoed this belief on this board

The notion that a woman should marry her rapist is barbaric. There is an old Italian tradition of engagement by rape. If a woman rejects a man's proposal, he can force her to marry him by raping her and therefore making her unmarriageable to anyone else. Until recently community pressure forced the woman to go through with it, even if the reason she rejected the proposal in the first place was because she was aware of his violent tendencies. At least one woman successfully got her would-be fiance convicted for rape. That is as it should be.

There are so many problems with the Bible that it is doubtful that it should be used as a guide to moral behavior, much less scientific insight. Few believe that the admonitions laid down in Leviticus should be applied to people in modern times. Liberal Christians believe that Jesus overturned all the old cruel Old Testament laws. I don't know enough about the Bible to know whether this is true or not, but if the Bible overrides, or appears to override common decency, then decency should prevail.

Yes I have read the Bible. I'll admit there is much of it I do not understand. I think that's true for any modern reader, even you.

I believe you believe every word in the Bible as interpreted by your church. Other Christians interpret it differently, for example that the commands in Leviticus were for that time and place only. Your church interprets the story of Noah's son finding him drunk and naked as a justification for white supremacy. I was brought up as a Southern Baptist and even that relatively conservative church never made that connection. The words are just not there.

Liberal Christians believe the Bible was not necessarily meant to be taken literally. I say the Bible is so deeply flawed that it cannot be salvaged as a spiritual guide, but tradition prevails, even if traditional interpretations don't.

The sixty-six books of the Bible were written by about forty different authors, but to anyone who looks at the Bible objectively, it is evident that God was not leaning over their shoulders telling them what to say. They called it as they saw it, or how they wanted their readers to see it.

I don't keep changing my name, the board managers do it for me. I haven't yet figured out how to change it back or even if I have the authority to change it. And I see that this board is big on authority.

People like me who think for ourselves. Evolution has instilled various forms of altruistic behavior in various species including our own. We also have a rich history that tells us what works and what doesn't. Why throw all this away to go back to 66 books that was written thousands of years ago?

Your mother was right! Even the pilgrims who settled this country from England must have known, as did Christopher Columbus, that the world was round. The authors of the books of the Bible didn't know that, but we can forgive their ignorance. We cannot forgive modern people who go back to that ignorance looking for authority.

I don't know whether liberal Christians can back up their claims or not. I don't care. I don't look to this old flawed document for any kind of authority. I just know I am more comfortable in the company of liberal Christians than I am in the company of reactionary Christians.

What profession are you in? Engineer? Architect? Math teacher? You can't get into any of these professions using pi=3.

Try this simple experiment. Take a glass with edges straight up and down. Use a tape measure to measure the diameter. Make sure that you measure it straight across the middle of the rim. Then take a tape measure and measure around the outer edge of the glass at the rim. The circumference will be a little more than three times the diameter. You can do the math. It will come out to about 3.14. Taking error of measurement into account, you will get better results with a larger circular object, such as a table top.

The notion that pi=3 comes from the following Bible verse, which was not meant to be a lesson in geometry:

"And he [Hiram] made a molten sea [large bowl], ten cubits from the one rim to the other it was round all about, and...a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about....And it was an hand breadth thick...." — First Kings, chapter 7, verses 23 and 26

I don't think the writer knew anything about pi, but if 10 cubits is the outer diameter of the bowl and 30 cubits in the inner circumference of the bowl, the ratio of the outer diameter to the outer circumference comes out to about 3.14. For more details, including a calculation, see

The value of pi is precise but cannot be expressed in less than an infinite number of decimal places. It is of a class of numbers the ancient Greeks called irrational numbers. There are an infinite number of irrational numbers, including the square root of most numbers. Yet each irrational number has a precise value whether we can express it or not.

I know these things because I am interested in mathematics and I studied math in high school.

Secondly, read this if you think we're a cult. It will put your mind to rest .

It will be so wonderful Mr Smyth to be permanently singing in a world with no pain and such tasteful décor from which we will be able to observe the infinite torture of all the heathens, animists, zoroastrians, pagans, wiccans, perverts, mohammedans, communists, homosexuals, atheists - well virtually the whole world - the smoke of their torment ascending up forever and ever right there in front of Jesus. I can't wait to see the marvellous jasper walls and the gigantic pearls. Just imagine, each gate a single pearl! The foundations will be particularly interesting for me: I love brightly coloured gemstones. There will be more jasper for the first foundation with sapphire, a chalcedony and an emerald (not normally used as building materials) so it will be pretty impressive. Built up upon that will be sardonyx, sardius, chrysolite, beryl, a single topaz and a chrysoprasus, a jacinth and then a final foundation made out of amethyst (one of my favourites). And that's just the foundations! It will look amazing!! Just imagine approaching that, singing all the time and entering through one of the twelve access points to see that not only the streets but the entire city are constructed from pure gold, shining with jasper and in addition festooned with all manner of precious stones! Soooooooooooo classy.

I wonder what that poster will have to say about Numbers 16? I can't see any way to interpret God's words there but am slightly curious, what he thinks they mean. Is that wrong?

Can you please indicate how I have "misinterpreted" (in your opinion) Numbers 16? A sudden change of subject like that might suggest psychopathy.
