What Does "Things Happen for a Reason" Mean

I hear people say this all the time. I'm disappointed, however, when I hear people not a part of Landover Baptist Church give an explanation. They are always wrong.

Those who are wrong have never heard Pastor Zeke bellow this out from the pulpit, "Proverbs 16:4, The Lord has made everything for its purpose..."

Actually, I think Pastor Zeke enjoys what follows. He reviews the disasters of the past week like the condos in Homer-Town Florida falling over and other events clearly caused by God's wrath against sin.

When I hear people say, "Everything happens for a reason" I quickly jump in as say, "God decides what happens. God is the reason things happen." The conversation always moves on at that point because everyone within earshot has to agree it is correct.
Isaiah 24:1-3 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty (2)...as the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. (3) The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken his word.

Re: What Does "Things Happen for a Reason" Mean

Nail on the head. Christians know things don't happen for a reason.

People using public transport tend to say Things Happen for a Reason
    because
    1. They don't know what the reason is
    2. They read astrology columns in their pathetic magazines
    3. Tarot cards have replaced logic and reason
    4. Crystal workshops have replaced bootstraps
    5. Reading palms and tea leaves haven't replaced anything
5a. They're still as ridiculous as they always were
and when one of their half-baked ideas gets tried out, despite encouraging but extremely ambiguous signals from [4] above, some sort of narrative's needed to keep them sane.

So what "Things Happen for a Reason" means is that they don't know why things happen. And if I can sidetrack for a moment, people working in sectors [2] [3] and [4] above DO know why things happen. To make them rich. They also know HOW things happen
    because
    A. They're the ones doing those things
    B. They write the astrology columns using
    Bi. Deliberately vague language with
Bii. Buzz words in every sentence and
    Biii. Completely circular ideation
    C. They mine and sell the crystals
    D. They recommend esoteric tarot books
Tea leaf reading isn't a big money spinner and although gypsies will read palms for a modest fee, for example in a tent at an Episcopalian fête, the real money i.e. $millions, is elsewhere. The most ridiculous contender in this very strong field (for gullibility) however, is the "crystal" mining.
    FOR HER - ROLEX
    FOR HIM - BUCCELLATI
I don't like diamonds because they look stupid. Rubies are quite nice and some emeralds but I don't wear jewellery. And watches are available with rubies (usually encrusted with diamonds) but again watches are for people who don't know what the time is and I don't fall into that category. The two items here, an emerald tie clip and a ruby watch, are from respectable makers who source their gemstones responsibly. They may or may not care for the environment but do want maximum compliance with regulations and top quality, to max out prices if for no other reason. Tarot card obsessives on the other hand waffle on about "mother earth" and "other ways of knowing" which is why they spend so much on books, cards, astrology workshops and crystals. Whether gemstones or not, these crystals are the least ethically sourced of all, explosives, general smashing, even the rocks would be screaming if that were possible. And according to crackpot literature, it is and they do. The exorbitance is extreme but as we hear so often, everything happens for a reason.

The reason in this case is because they're crooks.

Truer words have never been spoken Mayor!
I find people are always looking to put the blame some place and never accept that maybe THEY sinned and the bad things that happen to them and others in their family are a just rebuke from God.
I'll see a retard or some fool with assburgers or missing a limb. Being a kind and concerned person, I'll ask them what horrific sin they did that caused God to inflict such disdain. So often, these unwanted cretins blow up and start a tirade full of expletives. The reason is plain as a hairy mole on a ladies face.
God loves those that Love Him. If you do not Love God over everyone else, expect Him to show His displeasure.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Amen. God has a plan for everyone.

Some people become megachurch pastors with mansions, yachts, private jets, front and back yard pools, etc. God gives them these things because they, and their ancestors, were good, God-fearing Christians.

Others are fated by the Lord to die horribly from parasites that slowly eat their eyeballs and then their brains from the inside. They and their ancestors worshipped false gods and demons and idols.

You reap what you sew, folks. Tithe properly to the Landover Baptist Church, and your eternal happiness is ensured. Or take reckless chances with your life (and afterlife!) by not supporting LBC with financial gifts of faith. Your choice.

I have a new family next door. It has a retard kid. Couldn't fault them on their dedication to the Christian Life. Bible study every day. No sex before marriage, and sex only for procreation purposes. 15% tithers at the Mercy Seat Christian Church. Responsible gun owners. So why do they have a retard kid? Well, one of the great grand parents of the kid was a blasphemous whoremonger. On his deathbed, he never asked God's Forgiveness. God doesn't forget.
58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; 59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. 60 Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee. 61 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bringk upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Some things run for ten generations. Some are permanent. If we started making up different regulations based on human values, which even the most optimistic agree derive from a very limited view of the universe, how could we know the effect on eternity?

This is a point that irks me too, Mr Mayor.

The unwashed hear stories of great floods that kill hundreds and a child is found alive 4 days later, and the ignorant declare this is a miracle! Well, I tell you that anyone can find a child alive - that is no miracle! These people cannot see the wood for the trees! There are none as blind as those who will not see! (Jeremiah 5:21)

The real miracle is the flood! Who else but God can perform such mighty works?

God The Father, and Jesus are at one on this.

                God The Father said
Am:3:1 Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you,
                [...]
Am:3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

                Jesus said
Joh:9:1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
Joh:9:2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Joh:9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

I don't understand why people don't pick up on the signs that God gives us. For example, where do hurricanes hit? The East Coast of the US, where sin abounds. You never hear about a category five hurricane hitting Iowa, do you? That's because the sin level in Iowa, while not zero, is sufficiently low that the Lord does not need to make an example of the state.

Another sort of reverse miracle could be cited here as an example of things happening for a reason. I'll only go back to the Roman Empire but I'd be confident the ancient Egyptians knew this too, living along the Nile as they did and relying on it for silt and irrigation; they could also measure things accurately. The Romans are long enough ago at 2,000 years and their aqueducts sufficient evidence for understanding the concept of level. And what could be more conspicuously level than a flood plain? Essentially there are two locations in a diagram I found. This sort of stuff is probably taught to 8 or 9 year olds. And not considering the Egyptians for now, although they would also have understood, surely any Roman could distinguish these locations. One is a good place to build a house. One is a place where, if you build, when the river swells WOOSH! you'll be washed away. And probably drown, especially at night. Which location is which? 1? Or 2?

The reverse miracle is that anyone would get planning approval to build on a floodplain to start with. And when the rain comes, perfectly normal rain according to seasonal variations and on record (as if the floodplain were not a record itself) o woe everyone's surprised there's a flood. Sometimes it's suggested that the planning department or one of its officials was demon possessed. That is certain to be the case in heathen lands where they build right on the beach in plain view of Krakatoa knowing what happened last time; apart from Christian missionaries everyone is likely to be claimed by multiple demons II Corinthians 4:3-4 but for city planning regulations inflicting evil on floodplains, as Ezekiel Bathfire pointed out, we needn't look beyond Amos 3:6b. It's called Occam's razor.

                    QUIZ

I think the best place to build is
1 anywhere on the Eau de Nil locations
2 at any location tinted in Papaya Whip

Your statement together with your comments suggests that "Love is God" would better describe your position. In either case we'd need to define love. What definition are you using?

Sister Handy, I think we have in Mr. James one of those, "I'm sure it says that somewhere in the Bible. Don't hold me to telling you an actual passage of Scripture."

These sorts are worse than the Fluffy Bunny Christians like Ned Flanders from The Simpsons.

I would characterize Mr. James as a "Hearsay Christian". And as we all know, hearsay is not admissible in court.

When we all face Our Lord on The Day of Judgment, the only thing admissible will be Jesus's blood covering of our sins, along with a sincere effort at knowing and obeying His Commands.

People who claim certain things are not sins (due to lack of reading the Bible) can NOT claim Jesus' blood for remission of their sins. However can one repent, submit to The Lord and ask His forgiveness if one dares to disagree with The Lord on what is and what is not a sin?

                              That's completely crazy.
