    16. Children of the Corn (1983)



    I am actually torn on this one. Although it shows strength of faith, and the importance of having a firm hand on your children, the amount of demon worship in it makes me uneasy.

    Perhaps one of the pastors could make a better call on this one.

      BelieverInGod, thank you for reviewing the two movies I suggested!

      As for this one, as I understood it; children with no guidance (they have no elders of any kind) are completely at loss in life. Here, they end up creating their own religion, twisting things to their convenience and following false idols that are just manipulations created by a few of them, who saw it could be a useful tool to rule their peers through lies and unfounded fear.

      The only good things these kids did in one of the movies (I don't remember which one) was to a kill a woman who was wearing make up.

      I think it is a valuable lesson for kids. "Obey my voice according to that which I command thee"... if you don't want to end up abandoned in a corn field full of crazy, ignorant kids just like yourself... sorry I got a bit carried away there.

          The Wicker Man was a good exposé of paganism.
          Hermaphrodite worship is similarly exposed in Fellini's "Satyricon"

                Come on, this wasn't even made in the US I haven't actually seen the movie, but it's about pagan Rome and Homosexuality. How could you even expect this to be on a list of acceptable horror movies?

                  Talking about demons, I believe this computer may be infested. I typed out a review and then the browser crashed.

                  I had to think about this one for a while, because Hellyweird has again taken liberties with the words "true story". The entire true story behind this movie is that a family moved into a house, discovered that it used to be a mortuary and then started seeing "ghosts". But that doesn't sell movie seats does it.

                  The reasons I decided to give this movie thumbs up is that for once the family brings in a pastor rather than a catholic priest. Also it shows what can happen when a woman tries to usurp her husbands position of leader of the house.

                  Sarah Campbell takes her son to a hospital on a regular basis and decides she is too lazy to make the long drive anymore, so she rents a house in a nearby town with absolutely no consideration as to how her husband is going to pay for two houses. She then finds out that the house was used as a mortuary and for witchcraft by previous owners. Her oldest son (the sick one) is blessed (cursed?) with the ability to see the demons and brings in a pastor who understands how to deal with witchcraft. Of course this is all against his mothers wishes and she turns into a hysterical ninny. The husband has a very small role in the movie as he's too busy working, trying to keep up with his wifes spending habits.

                  So the pastor helps the son clear one of the demons out of the house, but does not realize that this one particular demon was keeping the others in check. The demons go nuts and start attacking the family. So the son and pastor decide to cleanse the house by fire. Oldest son is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of his family, but dad shows up just in time and saves him.

                    I'm sorry for my inappropriate selection. Absinthe consumption over the last couple of days might help to explain my poor judgement, but I do not offer that as an excuse.

                    The film has many horrific tableaux, but my lasting impression has been of the poor hermaphrodite, dragged across the desert with no water, dying of thirst, flayed by the sun - and heathen!

                          That movie was unique in the way it was filmed, but, as for overall acting and such, it wasn't all that good.
                          If you wanna see any movie about the "blair witch" I would suggest the sequal, the acting is sooo much better.

                            What about Stigmata?
                            This movie isn't technically a "horror" movie as much as a "religious thriller" (at least from what I've read and seen about it), but since you all aren't too fond of catholics, I'm curious as to what you think.

                                Dull, boring and not really a horror movie (unless you're scared by the "scary ride" at the state fair). It just went for the shock scare, make you jump out of your seat kind of thing. It had no moral redemption whatsoever and was really a waste of time.

                                As for "scariest movie of all time", they need to learn from the Masters. To this day I don't walk past a large flock of crows without getting a little nervous. When a movie still haunts you 47 years after it was made, that's scary. Not silly CGI effects that make you go EEK!
