Re: Volunteers needed for Fashion Police!

I'm already sort of like a fashion policeman, at least, I have that effect.

When we arrived in 2003, the first thing we saw was people welcoming us, including women who were dressed disgustingly, with tight jeans, skin showing all over the place, etc. They were dancing, jumping up and down to bounce their boobs, all sorts of indecency everywhere.

Well, within a couple of days that all stopped, and now Iraqi women are dressed extremely modestly, and they never behave aggressively around males. They avoid eye cpmtact, walk away, and if you talk to them, they never talk back, unless you count quiet praying.

I don't know what it is that made all the difference in Iraq, but I want to see it happen in America.

Well, I often tell the kids to pull their pants up. Just because the sign says 'shoes and shirts required', it's expected that one wear pants, too.
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.

Okay, we're still one recruit short. Here's some more reading that should convince you all to sign up for God's Fashion Police:

Christian women have obligation to dress modestly, Mary Mohler says

          By Michael Foust

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)--Mary Mohler believes there are certain clothes Christian women should never wear. Ever.

Whether it be miniskirts, hip-hugger jeans or skin-tight shirts, Mohler -- wife of seminary president R. Albert Mohler Jr. -- believes they should be avoided. Her reason? Christian women have a biblical obligation to dress modestly and reflect holiness.

And she doesn't believe that immodest clothing is necessary to be fashionable. Mohler spoke about the biblical view of modesty to a group of women at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in a Sept. 24 event sponsored by the Pendergraph Women's Ministry at the Louisville, Ky., seminary, that included a brief fashion show showcasing inexpensive, modest fashionable clothes.

The world's attitude toward fashion, Mohler said, should not be the church's.

"The [world's] attitude is if you've got it, flaunt it," she said. "Leave as little to the imagination as possible. [Funny expression, "leaving little to the imagination". Seeing a 13-year old in a mini-skirt is right where the imagination gets started, isn't it? -Jeb] Regenerate Christian women, I don't believe, leave home with this attitude. We seek to live godly, holy lives."

Nevertheless, immodest dress is a problem in local churches on Sunday mornings, Mohler said. Women may not have a worldly attitude about modesty, but because of naivete, carelessness, busy lifestyles or cultural pressures, some women unknowingly dress immodestly, she said.

She told how she once visited a church that had a dress code.

"I applaud them that they have the boldness to have a dress code," she said. "It's for members only. But if a strong conservative church like that has a dress code, what does that tell you? It tells you that there are problems even in that setting where people are coming dressed inappropriately to worship."

To make her point Mohler gave several wonderful examples of Christian women dressing immodestly. For example, "Clueless Clarice" simply pulls something out of the closet before going out, not taking the time to examine herself in the mirror. "Disorganized Delores" has three children and says she doesn't have the time to consider what she wears.

"Stylish Stephie" only wears what's fashionable. "Frugal Frances" only wears what's cheap. "Dieting Diane" has one size of everything and often wears clothes that are too small -- simply to reward herself for shedding a few pounds.

"I call these cases accidental immodesty," Mohler said. "It's not deliberate, but the result is the same and what it looks like to the world is, 'These Christian women dress just like we do.'"

Citing Job 31:1 -- where Job makes a covenant with his eyes not to look at a virgin -- Mohler said Christian women should help their male counterparts maintain pure thoughts.

"We must remember what battles men face to stay pure as they are stimulated visually by women," she said. "... They should never have it flaunted in their faces, and to have it done at church is an abomination."

The biblical command to dress modestly, Mohler said, is first found in Genesis 3, where God makes "garments of skin" for Adam and Eve. She pointed out that God found their first attempt at clothing -- fig leaves sewn together -- unacceptable.

"Their remedy was not good enough," she said. "They were not clothed. They were [simply] covered."

Both the apostles Paul and Peter address modesty issues in the New Testament, Mohler said.

She read 1 Timothy 2:9-10: "Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness."

She also read 1 Peter 3:3-4: "Your adornment must not be merely external -- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God."

Immodesty, Mohler noted, has always been a problem.

"It's a timeless problem," she said. "In biblical times there were problems with how women dressed."...

"Perhaps we need to commit these two definitions [of modesty] to memory and maybe cut them out and ... take them to the dressing room with us to realize [that], 'Yes, there are biblical directives, there are biblical standards, and here's where they are,'" she said.

She gave other examples, including Romans 12:2 ("... do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed ...") and 1 Timothy 4:12 ("... show yourself an example of those who believe ...").

Mohler suggested that women sort through their closet and "throw away some things that really do not pass the test. Does God care how we dress? You bet he does. He cares about every aspect of our life, and we are called to holiness."

Mohler admitted that there are seeker-sensitive issues involved in the issue. In the past, she said, people may have looked down on someone not dressed in traditional Sunday morning attire. But what "started as a well-intentioned move to counter that" has gone awry.

"[N]ow the flood gates are open and anything goes. It's going to be very hard for us to recover and to take steps to go back [in the other direction]."

Mohler gave a list of items that her daughter will never be allowed to wear: halter tops, tube tops, skin-tight shirts, low-cut shirts, midriff-exposing shirts, miniskirts, short shorts and anything from Abercrombie and Fitch.

"Do I sound like an authoritarian parent?" she asked. "I hope so. Because I am a parent, and as parents we are given a lot of different jobs, and it's challenging. We are to love our children and shepherd them and nurture them. But we're also to teach them ... because they're still children. They need direction."

Many teenage girls, Mohler said, are allowed to dress immodestly because their parents are trying "to be their daughter's friend instead of being her parent." They try to rationalize how they dress by saying, "She's a good kid. She doesn't smoke or drink. She's going to use her own money for this."

"We all want our kids to love us," Mohler said. "I want my kids to think I am the greatest mom in the world. But at what cost? We've got to teach them from the early days that they have to stand for something or they're going to fall for everything."

Mohler said when she lectures on modesty, she often receives words of encouragement.

"Whenever I speak on this," she said, "mothers of sons will come and they will say, 'Please continue to proclaim this message wherever you can. What else can we do? We don't have daughters ... but we have sons that are looking at how [other parents'] daughters dress.

"... Men really struggle with this, and it is our job as mothers of daughters to make sure that we don't make the job any harder for them."

          Lasciviousness

          Jack H. Kirby
          Las Cruces, New Mexico

In Gal. 5:16-21, the apostle Paul contrasts the works of the flesh (fornication, lasciviousness, drunkenness and such like) with the fruit of the Spirit. He says that those who practice these things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Thus it would behoove us to know more about these things and just what they encompass, in order that we might not be guilty of that which would condemn our souls and cause us to miss heaven. Certainly no rational soul desires to spend eternity in Hell, so it should prompt us to do that which would save our souls and refrain from that which would condemn.

Our subject concerns uncleanness and lasciviousness. These two are related and we will discuss them together. By uncleanness the Lord had reference to our spirits, not our fleshly bodies.

Let us define lasciviousness. This is a rather large word and is not understood by many people. Lasciviousness means, "Wanton, lewd, lustful, tending to excite lewd or wanton thoughts or emotions, as objects or pictures; filthy words, indecent bodily movements, unchaste handling of males and females. " These definitions are from Webster's and Winston's English Dictionary and Thayer's Greek Lexicon. Can you not begin to see involved in this definition such things as lewd and lustful literature, books and such like? And yet many Christians buy and read these things.

Can you not see so-called sexy picture shows condemned here! And yet our newspapers are full of the ads for these movies showing nude women and men, passionate love scenes and, more often than not, intimate bed-room scenes. The movie industry continues to produce these pictures because people will buy tickets to see them.

Can you not see that all dirty, filthy Divine Revelations are condemned here? Yet many times people who take active parts in churches are heard telling filthy, dirty tales, so-called Divine Revelations. They say, "Let's be broad minded." The Bible says they will not inherit the kingdom of God; their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone (Rev. 21:8).

Can you not see the modern dance condemned in the definition of lasciviousness? The definition includes "indecent bodily movements, unchaste handling of males and females." What could be more descriptive of the dance? Yet, in spite of the warning that those who practice such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God, many who profess to follow Christ dance, and think nothing of it.

Can you not see that indecent and immoral apparel is condemned here; The wearing of low cut dresses, plunging neck lines, tight fitting dresses or pants, mini-skirts, hot pants, bikini bathing suits, etc. Surely these things excite and produce lewd and lustful thoughts in men and boys. In spite of the repeated Bible warnings, mothers who claim to be Christians will dress their daughters in these types of clothing or allow them to do so, even in so many cases wearing this type themselves. Then, they wonder why the daughter sometimes does things she should not and gets into trouble. What can they expect if they openly advertise their wares by exposing those parts of the body that make the boys lust after them? And, in most cases, the Mothers who allow their daughters to wear short shorts and halters have not even prepared the daughter's minds for what will ultimately result by frankly discussing these facts of life with their daughters. Yes, this is plain talk, but in view of Bible teaching we need this kind of teaching multiplied many times over.

The Apostle Paul commanded in 1 Tim. 2:9, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel. You ask, "What is modest apparel? Grandma wore her dress to her ankles and wrists. Must I?" No, we would not attempt to teach that the Bible requires this, but we can perhaps better understand modesty by looking at immodesty. Now if short shorts and halters are modest, how much shorter could the shorts be cut or how much lower could the halter be worn and be still modest? I have asked that question many times without an attempted answer. Some of these low cut dresses are so low and skirts so short, you don't know whether the woman is in them too far or not far enough. No, I am persuaded these people know what modest apparel is; the trouble is they either do not realize that they are causing others to sin as well as themselves, or they simply do not care.

The Bible teaches that one individual can cause another to sin. The apostle wrote in 1 Cor. 8:11, "For through thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother for whose sake Christ died." Again in Matt. 18:7, "Woe to that man through whom occasions of stumbling comes." In Matt. 5:32, "Everyone that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, making her an adulterous." So it is evident that one person can be the cause of someone else sinning.

In Matt. 5:28, Jesus said, "Everyone that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart". The woman who parades her almost nude body on our streets, on her lawn, or in the stores around town, may think she has done no wrong. But if her indecent dress excites lewd thoughts in men and boys, she has done wrong and will stand condemned by this sin unless she repents and stops such indecency. How can she know when she has caused someone to have impure thoughts? She cannot know. This is the reason she must dress properly at all times in public.

Yes, modest apparel is required by the Lord. But usually when someone teaches a lesson along these lines, someone objects by saying that only those object whose mind is in the gutter. Would you accuse the Lord of having His mind in the gutter? He is the one who has legislated against such immodest dress.

The sin of lasciviousness led to King David's demise and has led to many, many others since. Bathsheba was bathing in a place so public that David saw her and committed several grievous sins. James tells us that "every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed- Then when lust hath conceived- it bringeth forth death" (3a3. 1:14, 15). Only the judgment will reveal how much sin is a result of near-naked women parading the streets. Just as Bathsheba was not innocent in the sin of David, neither is the woman innocent today who deliberately exposes her body to the gaze of the world already wild with passion. The woman who appears in public half-dressed is walking in rebellion and in open opposition to God and His Word. Christian women will not so act.

I was reminded of these two cartoons. My dad has them on the fridge to embarrass his two younger kids who insist on showing belly fat and saggy pants:

The new term for chicks who wear short shirts to show off stomach fat is "muffin top". Very descriptive.

And because that heathen skater has that skateboard conveniently blocking the way to his rude bits. Of course in the name of decency, but now it's safe to assume that they want us to think he isn't wearing a good clean pair of Christian Grey briefs! Perhaps the message is that that butt-sniffin homo boy opposite is so demoniacally mesmerized by that skater's Part A.

I myself have nice pair of camouflage-green boxers that are so thick as to his any fact that there is even a rude bit there at all. Of course, SUV loves nothing better than to wash them (and thankfully she can't read this for she is forbidden to do so). I wish she would use more of powerful product (one that would particularly take a chunk out of the Earth God gave us to pillage). This brown pudding stain at the back has been there for weeks!
