    Hello

I was linked to this forum by a friend. I originally was just going to leave, since I am atheist, but I noticed on your rules that you did not mind friendly rational discussion, so I decided to try to instigate some.

A little about me: I am British, and I can't do spelling and grammar the American way: apologies to those who can't stand British spelling and grammar. I sang in a Cathedral choir for five years, have read the Bible (it has been a while though) and I went to a Christian school. My atheism is due to my deep rooted cynicism (as shown by my username) and my love of science.

I am perfectly happy to debate with anyone on my views. The major reason why I joined was to find out why all of you have such militant views on atheists and other religions in general.

One final note, trolling is immature and I never do it.

    Re: Hello

Welcome friend. What makes you think your Church was Christian? Why do you choose to ignore the majesty of God? Do you deny Jesuses existence?
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

What's "militant" about following the Bible?

Is it "militant" to follow the shop manual when replacing a transmission?

Thanks for your welcome. I'm pretty sure it was Christian, considering I attended every single service and concert during which there were Bible verses, sermons and Christian music. We also had a Bishop.

I don't ignore God per se, I am aware that people believe in His existence, but I personally have to see something to believe it. I don't condemn anyone for believing anything I personally don't, but proof is always a good thing

Actually, Jesus of Nazareth DID exist around 4 BC, but whether or not he was the Son of God remains to be proven fact.

What I meant by that is you are all so very blunt in your views: something which I actually rather respect. At least there's no pussyfooting around the subject worrying about political correctness. I don't agree with most of your views, but at least you're honest

On what evidence are you basing that assertion? Because there is no other contemporary evidence for Jesus' existence than the Bible. "I read it once in a history book" doesn't count.

My apologies. I cannot actually state exactly where it is written, but I know that there are brief references in both pagan and Jewish sources, from decades or centuries later. Most scholars agree that Jesus did exist as a person. The two most disputed facts about him are in fact his birth and his crucifixion and resurrection as you may imagine.

I can't quote it factually, as seen above, but I was taught about it during Religious Studies at school.

                  Hello, Pastor Ezekiel.

I believe I introduced myself above. I don't tend to give out my real name on the internet, if that is what you meant. I left my church two years ago to concentrate on getting good grades in my exams, since the services were taking up too much of my time.

I don't have a relationship with Jesus, but I don't mind those who do. I don't worship the Queen! I don't know where you got that idea from, save that I am British. In all honesty, I believe that the monarchy are outdated figureheads sucking money out of our tax coffers

I was unaware that I was being disrespectful. It said in the forum rules that peaceful debate was not against the rules.

No proof is needed. My blind faith is all the proof I need. But in addition to that, I have the New Testament, statements of the early Church Fathers (filthy Catlickers), and the pagan penis worshipers and Christ-killing Jewish sources you refer to include Josephus, the Gnostic gospels, and the Apocrypha. Of course, all of these are heretical except for the New Testament, and then only the KJV is correct. These heretical gospels do not detract from the authority of the KJV Bible because they all rely completely on hearsay, while the KJV Bible was received through direct inspiration of the Holy Ghost.

Fair enough. I, however, true to scientific method, need more than one source to verify something as fact.

I am quite surprised though. I would have thought that you would all jump at the chance to show Jesus was fact. Good on you for sticking to your faith

Actually, the Bible is not the "perfect and inerrant Word of God". I am sure that someone before me will have mentioned this, but there have been many iterations of the Bible before the King James Version including different translations, some of which had VAST differences and mistakes.

I am aware that I am on your turf, but can you give me something better than circular arguments? Please? Make me BELIEVE! I've READ the Bible and attended church. I sang for ten hours a week in the glory of the Lord! I want to see some attempts at justification!

For a final note, your faith is absolutely incredible. I wish I could believe in something, but unfortunately I cannot. I really admire those who can.

The Bible tells us that people like you cannot understand the Holy Scripture because your father is satan.

John 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
