  • The UNFORGIVABLE SIN: have you committed it?

Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness

How Do We Know We Have Not Committed the Unpardonable Sin?

    You don't.

Sometimes people become afraid that they have sinned against the Holy Spirit (sometimes in frustration at their struggle with sin) and start having terrible thoughts in their minds against the Holy Spirit. The more they try to not think the thoughts, the more they think about them. It can become a terrifying experience, and often accompanies depression and severe mental problems. Suicide, self-cutting, suicide-by-cop, suicide-by-security-guard, suicide-by-armed-citizen, all of these have been witnessed by myself personally.

Many of us have struggled with the fear that we might have committed the unpardonable sin.

It is almost impossible to just say, "I won't think those thoughts" because the very effort to refuse to think them focuses on them.

The way to stop thinking about something bad is to think about something good. Thus, one of the best antidotes to such fear is to increase one's focus on the love for God. "Perfect love casts out fear." (1John 4:18) "Love covers a multitude of sins." (1Peter 4:8) Of course, if you love God, you put your money where your mouth is. Did you notice how we have placed a paypal link at the bottom of the screen, for your convienence?

Sing praise to God (Eph 5:19, James 5:13)

    There is a neat chorus:
    "Holy Spirit, I appreciate you.

    Holy Spirit, I appreciate you.
You love us, and guide us,
    and live right inside us,
    Holy Spirit, I appreciate you."
Secondly, God says, "resist the devil and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)

When the thought came that if I thought something bad about the Holy Spirit, I might be blaspheming him, the more I tried to not think bad things, the stronger the thoughts came back. So, I turned and rebuked the devil by clicking the paypal button on the bottom of the page. Amazingly, I received almost instant relief. The old liar beat a fast retreat. He simply did not like having those things dumped back on him!

Such struggles are not uncommon. In Romans 7:15-25 Paul speaks of his struggle with doing that which he would not, and not doing that which he would. His agonized cry is "Who shall deliver me...?" (7:24). That is the very cry that sometimes is torn from our lips in our struggle with sin.

Here are some practical things that can help to avoid or deal with the fear of committing the unpardonable sin.

    1. Stay away from tempting situations (2Tim 2:22; 1Tim 6:11; 1Cor 6:18; 10:14; 15:33). Yielding to temptation in one area discourages and depresses, making one more vulnerable in other areas. Note the change in Adam and Eve’s feelings about their relationship with God when they fell into sin.

    2. When you fail, get things right with God right away. Being away from God is depressing. Adam and Eve hid from God. The longer we are away the more separated we feel and the harder it is to come back. Many who are separated from God found that He returned the moment they clicked the paypal button on the bottom of the page.
1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    3. Find someone to confide in and pray with.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

    4. Of course, Pray for wisdom (James 1:5) to deal with the problem.

    5. Get plenty of rest. Failure to get proper rest can upset our physical well being and bring depression. Consider whether you are sleeping properly. Sleep apnea may require help to get proper sleep to feel good.

    6. Avoid stressful situations. These upset the body and bring depression.

    7. Lend your knives, scissors, and other potential self-mutilation devices to a friend. Load your shotguns with non-lethal amunition, such as birdshot, and keep your other firearms unloaded.

    8. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, there's a paypal button at the bottom of this page.

UPDATE: Some people have been asking exactly what qualifies at "blasphemy". I consider this blasphemy, found in a hotel room, to be the standard. If you've done anything as bad as this, or worse, you're going to burn in hell and there's nothing you can do about it:

By any chance is there a Muslim equivalent to this article? Religiously-inspired suicide is still common in Iraq, despite our efforts. I was just at a new police station that we've built, and the amount of suspects and prisoners who had committed suicide was astounding.

Not just the hard-core criminals, but the shoplifters, petty vandals, pot smokers and such where using some very sophisticated suicide techniques. Seems they would put a bag over their heads, then shoot themselves in the back of the heads, and then, with their last ounce of strength, tie their hands behind their backs.

All deceased persons in Iraq have their hands tied behind their backs, I think it's related to fears of zombification. I know, quaint beliefs these backwards people have.

I don't think that mudslimes have any unforgiveable sin, because they have no forgiveness from Christ.

I'm pretty sure anything goes in that moon cult.
      Who Will Jesus Damn?

Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:

It's a sad problem over here. Many the time were we have placed a suspect naked into a holding cell only to comeback an hour later to find they had managed to hang themselves on a noose they had managed to smuggle into the cell with them. The wicked just can wait to kill themselves off.

It's pretty obvious that violence, in every country in the world, isn't caused by guns at all. It's cause by rope, and probably woven hemp rope at that! The world would be a much safer place if guns were legalized and rope was banned.

Good point. All we have to do is recall sad death of poor Rev. Gary Aldridge
to see the caustic effects rope has on our society. Can the ropes rights lobby look me in the face say Rev Gary wouldn't have been found dead, hanging hogtied in two rubber wet suits if it wasn't for rope?

Re: The UNFORGIVABLE SIN: have you committed it?

Normally nothing of interest goes on in our regular instantmessaging debates, but this one caught my eye: here a Catholic tries to convince a morally upright Pastor that there's no such thing as the unforgivable sin!

              (2007-10-27 22:07:43) MBurmy:ALL SINS ARE FORGIVEABLE...
(2007-10-27 22:08:18) pastrbillyreuben: Even dying without accepting Jesus as one's personal savior?
(2007-10-27 22:08:30) MBurmy:And please stop with that Mark 3-26 blasphemy against the Holy Spirit blah blah blah twisting nonsense...
(2007-10-27 22:08:49) pastrbillyreuben: Is dying without accepting Jesus as one's personal savior forgivable?
(2007-10-27 22:09:13) MBurmy:If you've loved God to the best of your ability and loved your neighbor as yourself...
(2007-10-27 22:09:47) pastrbillyreuben: ok, is dying without having "loved God to the best of your ability and loved your neighbor as yourself" forgivable?
              (2007-10-27 22:09:58) MBurmy:WE DON'T JUDGE.
              (2007-10-27 22:10:10) MBurmy:That's God's job.
(2007-10-27 22:10:13) pastrbillyreuben: who's judging? I asked was that forgivable?
(2007-10-27 22:10:35) MBurmy:That is only for God to know.
(2007-10-27 22:11:00) pastrbillyreuben: so you think the Bible is just a bunch of nonsense then
              (2007-10-27 22:11:17) MBurmy:What does James 4:11-12 say?
(2007-10-27 22:12:23) pastrbillyreuben: that doesn't answer the question I asked.
(2007-10-27 22:12:52) MBurmy:If I thought the Bible was a bunch of nonsense, would I be quoting a verse?
(2007-10-27 22:14:48) pastrbillyreuben: When Jesus said, he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, do you think He was speaking nonsense?
(2007-10-27 22:15:20) MBurmy:What does "hath" mean? I know what "has" means...
(2007-10-27 22:15:21) pastrbillyreuben: Even your corrupt NIV says will never be forgiven
(2007-10-27 22:15:34) pastrbillyreuben: But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. (NIV)
              (2007-10-27 22:15:36) MBurmy:I've switched to NAB.
(2007-10-27 22:16:03) MBurmy:And how did I blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?
(2007-10-27 22:16:05) pastrbillyreuben: what does it say there?
(2007-10-27 22:16:36) pastrbillyreuben: let's stay on the current subject. You just said "all sins are forgivable".
(2007-10-27 22:16:41) pastrbillyreuben: you are clearly wrong
(2007-10-27 22:16:54) MBurmy:You are taking the verse out of context...
(2007-10-27 22:17:06) MBurmy:Whoever blasphemes against the holy Spirit: this sin is called an everlasting sin because it attributes to Satan, who is the power of evil, what is actually the work of the holy Spirit, namely, victory over the demons.
              (2007-10-27 22:17:23) MBurmy:And how did I do that?
(2007-10-27 22:17:32) pastrbillyreuben: is that sin forgivable or not? Do you have a context where that sin is forgivable?
(2007-10-27 22:17:57) pastrbillyreuben: please stay on the current subject. Don't change subjects when you back yourself into a corner.
(2007-10-27 22:18:21) MBurmy:Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive any sin.
              (2007-10-27 22:18:27) MBurmy:John 20:23
(2007-10-27 22:18:39) MBurmy:"...Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."
(2007-10-27 22:19:11) pastrbillyreuben: Are you saying that Jesus was lying when he said "everlasting" in your version?
(2007-10-27 22:19:20) pastrbillyreuben: stretching the truth a bit?
(2007-10-27 22:19:43) MBurmy:No more than you calling Him a liar in John 20:23
(2007-10-27 22:20:27) pastrbillyreuben: it doesn't say anysin in John 20:23.(2007-10-27 22:20:48) pastrbillyreuben: I would never call Jesus a liar. I'm not a blaspheming Catholic.
(2007-10-27 22:21:09) MBurmy:This power of succession was handed to our priests, which is why we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation
(2007-10-27 22:21:33) pastrbillyreuben: handed to your fake priests by whom?
(2007-10-27 22:22:24) MBurmy:That covers Apostolic, the fourth mark of the Church, as our Church's line goes way back to the Apostles.
(2007-10-27 22:23:03) pastrbillyreuben: There was no Catholic church until 300 AD, when Constantine, in a purely political move, mixed elements of Christianity and popular paganism to form his new state religion.
(2007-10-27 22:23:23) pastrbillyreuben: Real Christians were persecuted.
              (2007-10-27 22:23:26) MBurmy:The first Pope was Peter.
              (2007-10-27 22:23:32) MBurmy:The second was Linus.
              (2007-10-27 22:23:37) MBurmy:The third, Anacletus.
(2007-10-27 22:23:50) MBurmy:There were probably over 20 more before Constantine.
(2007-10-27 22:24:00) pastrbillyreuben: Peter was not a pope.
              (2007-10-27 22:24:04) MBurmy:Was Emperor, I mean...
(2007-10-27 22:24:12) pastrbillyreuben: Was Peter infallible?
              (2007-10-27 22:24:28) MBurmy:You misunderstand "infallibility"
(2007-10-27 22:25:06) MBurmy:The Pope is still liable to sin, and if he tells you who wins the World Series, keep your betting money in your pocket.
(2007-10-27 22:25:18) pastrbillyreuben: In Catholic speak infallible is to fallible as inflammable is to flammable.
(2007-10-27 22:25:21) MBurmy:He is infallible when he SPEAKS ON DOCTRINE OF FAITH AND MORALS.
              (2007-10-27 22:25:44) pastrbillyreuben: I'm a Christian, friend. I have no "betting money".
(2007-10-27 22:26:32) MBurmy:Stay on the subject...You sure are the pot calling the kettle black
(2007-10-27 22:27:31) pastrbillyreuben: You already got us off the subject. Is blaspheming the holy spirit forgivable?
(2007-10-27 22:27:57) pastrbillyreuben: can one blaspheme the holy spirit and be forgiven for it?
(2007-10-27 22:28:07) MBurmy:That depends on your definition of "blasphemy"
(2007-10-27 22:28:32) MBurmy:Jesus was denouncing the Pharisees, who claimed He had power to cast out demons by Satan...
(2007-10-27 22:29:08) pastrbillyreuben: ok then, can one claim that Jesus' power to cast out demons came from Satan, and be forgiven for that?
(2007-10-27 22:29:36) MBurmy:If they sincerely repent and never do it again, yes...
(2007-10-27 22:30:12) pastrbillyreuben: What did Jesus say in your translation in Mark 3:29?
              (2007-10-27 22:30:19) MBurmy:ok, in that case
(2007-10-27 22:30:20) MBurmy:SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!
              (2007-10-27 22:30:36) MBurmy:(bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang)
(2007-10-27 22:33:02) pastrbillyreuben: Maybe you should throw out your NIV and switch to The Message. It does an even better job of twisting scripture to your unsaved tastes.
(2007-10-27 22:33:30) pastrbillyreuben: Mark 3:28-30 (The Message) "Listen to this carefully. I'm warning you. There's nothing done or said that can't be forgiven. But if you persist in your slanders against God's Holy Spirit, you are repudiating the very One who forgives, sawing off the branch on which you're sitting, severing by your own perversity all connection with the One who forgives." He gave this warning because they were accusing him of being in league with Evil.
(2007-10-27 22:33:30) MBurmy:I have no idea what you're talking about...
              (2007-10-27 22:34:04) pastrbillyreuben: http://www.biblegateway.com/versions...ionInfo&vid=65
              (2007-10-27 22:34:59) MBurmy:That's what He meant...But that's not a translation, it's a transliteration
              (2007-10-27 22:35:11) pastrbillyreuben: http://www.navpress.com/Message/
(2007-10-27 22:36:36) pastrbillyreuben: It's the only English language translation of Mark 3:29 I could find that doesn't make it clear that the sin of blaspheming the Holy Ghost is unforgivable.
(2007-10-27 22:36:48) pastrbillyreuben: So it should be right up your alley.

Pastor Billy is a one fine tuned man in the word of God. There is noone like him.

What I like especially about him is how he does have patience and just puts it out there, even showing grace to many sinners and anger just like the Bible says! It can all balance out..

If the Lord leads you to it, he will get you through it.

Jeb's posting of our Pastor's transcript
brought forward again for its brilliance

                        QUOTE:

(2007-10-27 22:20:27) pastrbillyreuben: it doesn't say any sin in John 20:23.
(2007-10-27 22:20:48) pastrbillyreuben: I would never call Jesus a liar.

You got it and thank you for you're grace. (I will need a scripture backing up the grace to continue in my life though, even given you the time of day.) Confusing if it is a demon or the holy ghost. Saved 5 times at the alter only if it is on ..Sunday morning.. good for fellowship and Ginger snaps. Once a month they do this babtism thing. (only if the deacons agree that time is good for them) Otherwise you wait till next sunday and the chemicals are not working in the hot tub... And they have to ask for money to fix it!

Meanwhile! Don't you even dare to lose your own faith!!! The line goes..first the church, pastor! Husband! of the sheep and not the goat hearder! Second comes daddy!(husband wife and chilldren last!) Glory to God!

Gwen Shamblin does not like food and she goes against Christianty fellowship after Church hours.

If the Lord leads you to it, he will get you through it.

Here is some scripture for grace ...

Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

No need anymore for flapping tongue, sloshing tub or flippity flop, sister! All you need is faith, a King James version 1611 Bible, obedience and silence, and a congregation of True Christians™ around you to keep you on the straight and narrow!

(what kind of chemicals in the hot tub?)

(what have ginger snaps got to do with anything?)

(who is Gwen, and has she taken Jesus as her savior, or is she just another flippity-flapping flop-around?)

                            Sister Noddy
