The skating ban in Freehold has been a contentious issue for more than two decades due to aggressive enforcement and the lack of acceptable signage. Kids on skateboards and homers riding rollerskates and rollerblades have been fighting the tickets that they get when riding downtown by claiming that there was no way for them to know about the law. None of the fines were reduced because "ignorance of the law is no excuse to break it", in the words of Judge Obidiah Smith. Many skateboards were confiscated and auctioned online to generate funds for the FPD.
Due to the excessive number of complaints a sign has been placed downtown to let residents and visitors know about the skating prohibition. It also shows that kids should not be riding their bikes on the sidewalks.

I hope this public service message has been helpful in clearing up any misunderstandings.
If your little one's bike was confiscated by the FPD for sidewalk riding, a parent can come to the department's outside storage area to claim the bike. Proof of ownership is required, especially the serial number of the bicycle in question.
