I was kind of hoping that when they switched that thing on it would suck up parts of France and Switzerland into a black hole. That didn't happen, but they are now upgrading it to a 6.5 TeV beam which is scheduled to be switched on sometime in 2015 - we'll have to wait to see what happens then.

Normally I wouldn't respond to such idiotic rhetoric such as this, but "Satan's Stargate"? Why are you so afraid of science? All the Large Hadron Collider has done is proven the existence of the Higgs Boson particle, the so called "God" particle. I for one am happy for this. It proves that there is more to science than we can explain, we can see how this particle is moving and dying, but ultimately, it cannot answer something which will always be left up to faith. If you believe in creation, or evolution, or progressive creationism, it doesn't answer the big question. Before the Big Bang, what was there? God!

It's impossible to do so due to the scale of the actual particle packages. About several hundred atomic nuclei to be precise, cannot form a stable black hole sufficient to permit the destruction of the Earth. It would be far too small to stay stable long enough to actually have much of an effect on even the quantum scale, assuming such an object would form.

You are looking at this from the wrong perspective. It's not the things we already know where the risk is. It is the things we do not know. E.g. it could create some stranglet that destroys the entire planet.

One of these days scientists are going to invent something that destroys us all.

LHC set to re-start after break

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be switched on again next week, according to the laboratory that operates it.

The particle accelerator was shut down for the Christmas period shortly after setting the record for the highest particle energies ever attained.

Over the coming months, scientists aim to smash that record again as the experiments aim for energies of some seven trillion electron volts (TeV).

However, 2010's start will be at much lower, so-called "injection energies".

In the ensuing weeks, the energies will be increased, past last year's record of 2.36 TeV and toward the 7 TeV goal.

"We went into a technical shutdown over Christmas and we're now ready to switch it back on again," a spokesperson for Cern, the Swiss laboratory that hosts the LHC, told BBC News.

She said that the switch-on would be "after Monday" but said a firm date had not yet been set.

sooooo, the LHC has been runnig for quite some time now. Still no gatewas or demonic hordes marching in my city.

Still no results, either. Why are we taking these risks for a machine that does nothing productive?
