Soapy?

Hi ladies! I was wondering if any of you make your own soap. I was thinking of starting because I tend to have a knack for all things related to the upkeep of a home. It also seems to be useful and would get back to the feeling of the good old days, when men and women both had to bring something to the table. I'm thinking, 'I cook, I clean, I do laundry and work on projects like sewing skirts and stuff, why don't I make my own soap to save money and really be self sufficient. I'm sure you ladies know what it's like to realize you've just ran out of dish soap/laundry detergent and have to leave the house to get it. Maybe it'll save time? I don't know. Does anyone here already make their own soap?

I have friends who make soap using natural ingredients, and I buy my soap from them - it's definitely more expensive than the stuff you get at the supsermarket, but it's also far superior in quality and doesn't contain all those nasty, environmentally unfriendly synthetic chemicals, so I consider it worth every penny.
Form what I understand from them, it's a fairly time-consuming process, as the soap has to cure once it's mixed.

I have friends who make soap using natural ingredients, and I buy my soap from them - it's definitely more expensive than the stuff you get at the supsermarket. From what I understand from them, it's a fairly time-consuming process, as the soap has to cure once it's mixed.

After a considerable amount of research, these people are just trying to make money off you. They may be your friends but that doesn't mean they are getting it to you at a discount. Every site I've been to says soap is super cheap to make. And it's not time consuming unless they are sitting by it the full 2 weeks as it dries. I'm guessing that if I do everything right in my first try, it'll take an hour tops, and then I'll leave it alone for a day or two, cut it, and then let it cure unsupervised for 2-6 weeks. That's only 45 mins. to 2 hours tops, they're cheating you!!!! If my soap turns out well, I'll send you some if you want. Pics first of course, but I'm guessing that even with shipping I could only charge you $10 tops for 6-10 good size bars. Here's my proof in links below. Sorry... Here's a quote from one site.
Trick 1: Use a blender. The more finely the lye and fat molecules are intermixed the faster they will saponify. Using a blender, the trace stage can be reached in minutes instead of hours. Don't use an upright blender unless you don't mind millions of tiny air bubbles being permanently whipped into your soap. Use the hand-held type instead. With one of these, even your most stubborn oils should trace within 20 minutes. Sometimes, you can get a trace with animal fats in just a couple of minutes. Anyone who has sat around for hours stirring a batch of soap will be ecstatic with this.
Trick 2: Cook it. There are a couple of processes that I have developed myself yet are rather unorthodox. And this is one of them. If you don't have a blender, perhaps cooking your soap is for you. See our soap cooking page for more details. After it has cooled, pour or spoon it into the soap mold or tray and treat it like you would for the no-cook recipes. Even though it has been cooked, the chemical reaction that slowly turns liquid vegetable oils into soap will take much longer than cooked animal fat soaps.

My grandfather had a German manservant who once told me as a boy that joos are good for making soap.

I don't remember if he gave me the recipe.

The soap my friends make is made with all natural ingredients and pure essential oils, which makes their ingredients a bit more expensive. I have enough going on in my life with my job, my share of the housework, theater, and volunteering that I really don't have any desire to add making my own soap to the list. Besides, I enjoy knowing that I am supporting my friends' small business.

The soap my friends make is made with all natural ingredients and pure essential oils, which makes their ingredients a bit more expensive. I have enough going on in my life with my job, my share of the housework, theater, and volunteering that I really don't have any desire to add making my own soap to the list. Besides, I enjoy knowing that I am supporting my friends' small business.

That's great! It is nice to support friends in ways that benefit everyone! I bet they make some nice stuff. ^o^ What's your favorite scent? Do they make tropical stuff? Do they have an e-store?

I have a grudge (that's an understatement) against people saying "pure" essential oils, especially when mentioned after "all natural ingredients", and then people asking if this wonderful stuff can be bought via a medium that runs on nuclear power, gas, or oil.

I think you're saying you don't like people that act 'green' while
using the same resources in shipping and handling. But most women have sensitive skin. Both me and my mom can't use soaps, sprays, or lotions with high perfume or chemical contents because we break out. So using all natural products keeps us from being miserable in our own skins. I don't live a 'green lifestyle' so I have no problem with such indulgences. Do you have any problems with that?
