I think it goes without saying that the deaths of Liz, Zsa Zsa, and Doris would be a major celebratory event and they would deserve their own threads. Also good news: Yesterday (Friday), Mayor Hold and the Freehold City Council approved the $150,000 to be set aside for a spontaneous townwide party celebrating the deaths of those harpies. Fireworks, live Christian gospel music, catering, and vendors will be at hand.

I had just turned eight years old when that sickening film ("Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") was released in August 1953, so no--- I'm not in that scene. But I do have an interesting story about this film.....

It's a testament to Jane Russell's bargain with Satan that when I went to this film, I sat through three complete showings at the Liberty Theater in Downtown Davenport, Iowa. Apparently, I was powerfully affected by the sinful thrall of Jane Russell, and it had a hold over me. I went back to the theater every day during its three week run at the Liberty, and when a new film replaced it, I found myself taking the street car across town to the Uptown Theater on Harrison Street where the film showed for another week.

For the rest of the summmer, I had disturbing nightmares involving exercise equipment, tile rooms with no windows, falling from a cliff into a pool of milk, a pastry chef (holding a rolling pin), and multi-colored dancing fountains. I began loitering outside downtown gymnasiums in an attempt to find the source of the film's all-consuming power over my life. All that fall and spring, I remember grappling with these existential questions in the alley behind The Franklin Avenue Gymnasium.



It was there that I met "Pudge" Camarata and "Champ" Martin, two star wrestlers at Iowa State Teachers College. They showed me many wrestling holds, and I became extremely excited about wrestling. From 1946 through 1952, Iowa State Teacher's College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa) was one of the top wrestling schools in the nation. During those seven seasons the ISTC team placed each year in the top four at the NCAA tournament and had 16 individual national champions.

I became a wrestling groupie, trying to befriend the boys on the Iowa State Teachers College team, putting their photos up on my wall, getting their autographs, writing letters to them to let them know how much I admired them, making observations about their technique, suggesting particular positions, etc. One of my favorites on the ISTC team was Joe Rankin. I had his photo on my ceiling above my bed.



By the following summer I began to wrestle myself, imitating the moves I had practiced with the Iowa State Teacher's College wrestling team. Hardly a day would go by where I wasn't rolling around on the floor with other boys. The nightmares I had lived through after the traumatic exposure to Jane Russell in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" began to subside, replaced by dreams of athletic competition with muscular young Iowa men. Within two years I had completely shaken free of the satanic spell of Miss Jane Russell, and I rarely have nightmares involving exercise equipment. But I have never watched another Jane Russell film since. And you can certainly imagine my joy when I first heard that she had died (painfully, I can only hope).

During my formative years I was a very active member of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes through High School and College.Brother Worthington, I can not tell you how many times I have heard other young men tell that same kind of story, young athletic males that found themselves in the gymnasiums of the world. All of the stories did not include Jane Russell but all were tales of these young men wrestling with some inner demon and through hard work and God's Love were they able to hold back these evil thoughts. Bless you for sharing brother, it has been many years since I gave thought to those young sinewy men.
