I think it depends where in the UK you go to. Big cities like London and Manchester etc do tend to have more gay people and far more ethnicities within them. My town of Swansea is the same.
However, the place where I go to university is nothing like this, it is far away from any cites and is a very well behaved place.
So, to sum up my point, there are places where you can escape the troubles of a city life, as I have just spent a year in one of the most tranquil places I believe I will ever see

We are looking at Britain being a generally Godless island. The test is, can you visit the town comfortably without feeling that there are atheists, catholics, wiccans, muslins, hindoos, etc., spreadingtheir influence?

I can visit my university town and live in my university town without feeling there are the people you described spreading their influence.

Swansea, is my home town, and I decided to get away from there for university. This is because Swansea is a lot to handle and to deal with. Swansea seems to have a huge percentage of Welsh people as it is in Wales hehehe easy mistake to make.
