Now that is funny and gullible. Which police? Where? That's nonsense. The origins of the term are unknown and disputed, although the Snopes explanation Pastor Pistle posted above is the most authoritative and most widely accepted -- that it started amongst a group at San Rafeal High School.

Get it into your thick skull that police codes are known -- can be checked on. It is not a police code. And you learnt it from real potheads, did you. They'd know, for sure. Is that where you get all your information -- potheads.

Snopes is an authoritative site well-known for the quality of its research. Can you say the same about your pothead friends?

The idea of "420" comes from, as it was mentioned, "smoking a joint/blunt". This has a direct cognate in the phrase "smoking a pole", or lavishly licking another male's tallywhacker. As such, it is merely another attempt for the homer agenda to look "cool" and "hip" to today's youngfolk who merely wish to see the same things that the Apostle John saw on Patmos. If we do not band together to expose the Truth(tm), our entire culture will be handed over to these "pole smoking" terrorists!

What the Hell are you talking about? Smoking a blunt is doing marijuana. Smoking a pole is blowing some guy's (filth removed). They are two completely different things. And if a girl (filth removed) a guy's (filth removed), that's still not gay. 'Smoking pole' isn't just guy on guy. It's girl on guy too. There is no cognate!

The term 420 is used widely in Cannabis culture as a time to get high, a national day to get high, and cannabis itself.

There are a lot of different theories about how the word was first invented:

:: San Rafael theroy ::
In the early 1970's, a group of teenagers who attended San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California used to get high every day at 4:20 in the afternoon under the Louis Pasteur statue.

:: Bob Dylan theroy ::
In Bob Dylan's song, 'Rainy Day Women #12 && 35,' the lyrics contain 'everybody must get stoned.' 420 comes from the title, as 12 * 35 = 420.

:: Highway 420 ::
In Ontario, Canada in the 60's, marijuana grew freely on one of the Highways. This highway was later renamed in 1972 as Highway 420.

:: The Date 4/20 ::
April 20th is coincidentally (or not..) the birthday of Adolf Hitler who was born on April 20, 1889. It is also interesting to note that the Columbine High School shootings also occured on this date in 1999.

There are many other theories that have been debunked such as the Bob Marley theroy and the Police Code theory.
