The closest thing to it that archaeologists and historians have found was a large (but not by any stretch of the imagination global) flood 8000 years ago when the Mediterranean broke through the Bosporus Strait in what is now Turkey. I'm sure that to the inhabitants, it must have seemed that the whole world was under water.
