What does this bible verse mean? Psalms 137:9

    Psalms 137:9 http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/psalms/psalm137.htm

"Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock."

A "friend" of mine who is an atheist scum told me to check out this verse and I don't know how to interpreted it. Help me please.

I would be glad to explain it to you.

      Psalm 137

It is the end of the exile in Babylon when Cyrus the Great is about to take down the crumbling old empire and free the Jews. This time it would be the former conquerors whose children's heads would be smashed to pieces.

A beautiful psalm performed by these negroes.

For some reason they left out the dashing the heads. I can't imagine why.

Thank you for your replies. I think I understand now. But it still seems un-christian to smash children's head against rocks...

Why does doing Gods bidding seem wrong to you?

Do you think you understand everything and see the big picture better than God?

Never question Him, only ask for guidance.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Of course He is. You follow word of God, the KJV 1611 to the letter, you are Christian. If you don't follow it, then you are not.

Exactly. This is the kind of punishment reserved for non-Christians, the enemies of God.

Are you some kind of a retarded?

Tell me, are your children the Babylonian oppressors of the Jews?

I'm guessing NO, THEY ARE NOT.

Then why would your desire for the disposition of your children's brains have any relevance to Psalm 137?

                    IT DOES NOT.

You would do well to read and understand the Bible, and understand Christianity, before picking individual verses out of it and thinking you're going to "shock" True Christians(tm) with the Word of God.

Here are a couple of other points for you to consider before you try again:
Omnibenevolence (unconditional love for all) is NOT a Biblical concept. God points out frequently whom he HATES.

Hell is not an unending orgy of somewhat painful sex, ruled over by Satan as Milton imagined in Paradise Lost; it is a vast lake of Fire, created by God, in which you and every other sinner will be burned alive forever and ever. On an equal footing with Satan.

Non-Christians do not go to Heaven. Therefore, they go to Hell.

The "age of consent" is not in the Bible. All children, aborted babies, and miscarried babies are conceived and born in Original Sin, and thus condemned to Hell if they do not accept Jesus.
                    Bible boring? Nonsense!
Try Bible in a Year with Brother V, or join Shirlee and the kids as they discuss Real Bible Stories!
You can't be a Christian if you don't know God's Word!

Re: What does this bible verse mean? Psalms 137:9

                      from the New American Bible
Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock.
Christians do not accept "modern" altered "translations" of God's Word, and the verse your "friend" has shown you is a good example of how the message, and God's Plan For Salvation, is emasculated in Satan's attempt ruin us all.

PSALM 137:9 Happy shall he be that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
                      ©1611

God tells about the HAPPINESS he has in store for those who love Him, those who do His will. I hope that by now you have read THE WHOLE PSALM, and it is quite clear that God is talking about a SPECIFIC ACTIVITY enjoyed by an INDIVIDUAL:

                      Happy shall he be..

The NAB is one of Satan's "translations" in which he seeks to turn the clock back to the days of temple prostitutes, infant sacrifice, mumbo-jumbo and bestiality. Those revolting sex orgies were seen as some path of deliverance for large groups of "people" (heathens actually).
Intoxicated, hallucinating, drum-crazy those fools, billions of them, swallow any muck Satan pokes in their heads!
Just look at the wretched state of Africa, South Asia or any of the Mohammedan cesspits!!

Bad and getting worse: an addled quagmire of sex, murder and debauchery.

But there IS an answer - an answer that your deluded atheist "friend" does not want you to see. God has made a way for fallen man to be reunited with Him HALLELUJAH! (and women too, conditional upon childbearing).
Although God hates those who hate Him (and we hate them too: Psalm 139:21 ), for those INDIVIDUALS who accept His Perfect Love, great happiness is promised. God is perfect. We are imperfect. But once made perfect (upon accepting His Perfect Love) we are emboldened to express His Perfect Love.

                      I JOHN 4
15 Whosoeuer shall confesse that Iesus is the Sonne of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 And we haue knowen and beleeued the loue that God hath to vs. God is loue, and hee that dwelleth in loue, dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 Herein is our loue made perfect, that wee may haue boldnesse in the day of Iudgement, because as hee is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no feare in loue, but perfect loue casteth out feare: because feare hath torment: hee that feareth, is not made perfect in loue.
19 We loue him: because hee first loued vs.

                      ©1611

There are many examples of the happiness God has in store for those whom He loves. Imagine the excitement in the tiny heart of an infant as grasped firmly by the feet it is swung around above the head of one who knows God's Perfect Love. "What is this new game?" it might think, or "wheeeeeeeeeeeeee.." or something. But this is not some half cocked imperfect human game. This is the reality of Perfect Love. AMEN?
                      THWAKK!

Usually in this situation the baby will not die immediately, but go into convulsions and eventually die from inhaling vomitus or from dehydration. It will be of little concern to anyone though. Other activities will be taking place in this beautiful fulfillment, expressed in the Psalm, of God's promise:

                      ISAIAH 13:16,18
Their children also shalbe dashed to pieces before their eyes, their houses shalbe spoiled, & their wiues rauished.. Their bowes also shall dash the yong men to pieces, and they shall haue no pitie on the fruit of the wombe; their eye shall not spare children.
                      ©1611

They are all going to Hell

But the alternative to such an outcome for you, and your children is clear. God's Plan For Salvation brings the Love of Jesus: the fulfillment of Perfect Love throughout the ages, even in our own time. Some people, fools like that atheist you mentioned, choose Satan and hate. Not everyone chooses love. I believe that the Truth is easy to see. PRAISE HIS EXCELLENT LOVINGKINDNESS !

I think that in all these things, God's ONLY concern is to protect his believers and restore peace. His motto is, "Peace is proportional to the number of the enemy you smite." and God, being perfect, wants perfect peace.

It is not just for the Babylonians.
God employs not only His servants, but the elements as well. Our love - our understanding of love - is meagre. God's Love is complete.

                              JEREMIAH 51:1 Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will raise vp against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the middest of them that rise vp against me, a destroying wind;

As for Samaria, her King is cut off as the fome vpon the water.. Ye haue plowed wickednesse, yee haue reaped iniquitie, ye haue eaten the fruite of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mightie men. Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall bee spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battell: the mother was dashed in pieces vpon her children. So shall Bethel doe vnto you, because of your great wickednesse: in a morning shall the king of Israel be vtterly cut off.

Israelites, like today's liberals (and atheists and all followers of demonic false religions), engaged with abominable "belief systems" thereby incurring God's wrath. Temple prostitutes produce demon possessed children. God instructs ALL such filth to be destroyed. He states the appropriate method for killing those children:

                              EZEKIEL 9:1-2b,4-7
Hee cryed also in mine eares, with a loude voyce, saying; Cause them that hauecharge ouer the citie, to draw neere, euen euery man with his destroying weapon in his hand. And behold, sixe men came from the way of the higher gate, which lyeth toward the North, and euery man a slaughter weapon in his hand.. And the Lord sayd vnto him, Goe through the middest of the citie, through the middest of Ierusalem, and set a marke vpon the foreheads of the men that sigh, and that cry for all the abominations, that bee done in the middest thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing, Goe ye after him through the citie, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither haue ye pitie. Slay vtterly olde and yong; both maides, and litle children, and women: but come not neere any man vpon whom is the marke, and begin at my sanctuary: then they began at the ancient men which were before the house. And hee sayd vnto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slaine, goe ye forth: and they went forth and slew in the citie.

God does not want His children to go to Hell. The harlots (and their babies), the idolators and heathens, atheists and pagans in general who would lead us there He commands to be destroyed. Children are particularly vile. Even little children who giggle at His prophets are destroyed - by God's direct action - whether or not their mothers are prostitutes. Unborn children He commands to be ripped out of their mothers' bellies, such is their culpability in His eyes. Those who doubt the superiority of His priests, as was the case before the advent of Jesus, were destroyed together with their children (and their houses) by the direct action of God. That is the extent of His love. That is how marvellous He is.
