I don't worship Bhudda. Also don't think he wanted anyone to worship him. I just think he was a wise man guiding people towards inner peace.
His teachings don't dictate my actions, but they're a guide. Way more helpful than the bible, for me anyway. Would probably be useful for all of you too.

Why do you need to live by anyone else's teachings? Don't you have the brains to come up with a way if living your life by yourself?

Bhudda lived in the old days so how can his teaching be better than what a decent sensible contempory person could come up with.

I see karma is listed under the basic teachings of buddha. Do you believe in karma? Do you think that if a woman is beaten by her husband in this life, it means she was a wife-beating husband in a previous life? Do you believe buddha was tempted by the evil one before reaching "enlightenment?" I think you're a cherry-picker. But how do you decide which bits are true? Do you just choose the warm, fuzzy bits that don't contradict secular science?

First you say that buddha is right and any logical person would know it. Then you say that you follow the logical parts of his teachings because you think it's the right thing to do. By saying this you are acknowledging that many of buddhas teachings were illogical and therefore wrong. You follow buddha's teaching because you think it's the right thing to do. That makes you no different from, say, a fundamentalist muslim who follows mohammed's teaching because it seems like the right thing to do. I myself follow Jesus' teachings because I believe He is right. God's Word shows us the right thing to do.

Who came up with it in the first place then? It was a lot of people, but I think Bhudda was one of the first and probably the first to come up with his ideas. I obviously have my own ideas, but it doesn't mean I can't agree with some of Bhudda's ideas as well.

And I'm pretty sure his ideas weren't being reflected in society at the time or he wouldn't have had to spend time teaching anyone..

Just like English doesn't have to be taught in all schools to students who already speak English as a first language, or evolution doesn't have to be taught in a society that by and large accepts it, or math doesn't have to be taught, or Christians don't have to be taught in church every Sunday how to follow a God they already follow.

And many of Buddha's teachings, if he existed, were most definitely reflected the culture of his time. Buddhism has its roots in hinduism.

Hinduism it is clear has heavily influenced and inspired most of the religions which sprung from this land namely Sikhism, Jainism etc. including Buddhism. Hinduism and Buddhism have shared parallel beliefs that have existed side by side.

Friend, we are commanded to speak the Lord's Word, which is Himself, at all times.

The Bible says so and that settles it.

Yes I was wrong and yes I admitted it. I based my original comments off the fact in my mind that Hinduism didn't factor into Buddhism, which was incorrect. Now that I have the correct information, I can see that his teachings were not completely original. But I have no idea how you managed to conclude from that that his teachings are illogical. The ideas remain the same no matter who thought of them and they are pretty damn logical.

Oh. Right, yes. Quote that beforehand next time, I thought you meant all of his teachings are illogical. Yes, there are parts of his teachings that cannot be proven or understood using only logic. Such as the wheel of life idea, which is a possibility, but not what I think really happens when we die.

The link you previously provided describes the three universal truths.

1. Nothing is lost in the universe

The first truth is that nothing is lost in the universe. Matter turns into energy, energy turns into matter. A dead leaf turns into soil. A seed sprouts and becomes a new plant. Old solar systems disintegrate and turn into cosmic rays. We are born of our parents, our children are born of us.

This sounds like it is in concord with secular science, which you believe in. But then it goes on to say:

We are the same as plants, as trees, as other people, as the rain that falls. We consist of that which is around us, we are the same as everything. If we destroy something around us, we destroy ourselves. If we cheat another, we cheat ourselves. Understanding this truth, the Buddha and his disciples never killed any animal.

We are not the same as plants or trees. That is common sense. The belief that if we destroy something around us we destroy ourselves is purely subjective and, from a logical point of view, nonsensical.

2. Everything Changes

The second universal truth of the Buddha is that everything is continuously changing. Life is like a river flowing on and on, ever-changing. Sometimes it flows slowly and sometimes swiftly. It is smooth and gentle in some places, but later on snags and rocks crop up out of nowhere. As soon as we think we are safe, something unexpected happens.

Once dinosaurs, mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers roamed this earth. They all died out, yet this was not the end of life. Other life forms like smaller mammals appeared, and eventually humans, too. Now we can even see the Earth from space and understand the changes that have taken place on this planet.

This sounds like it is in accordance with secularism, but of course, according to the Bible nothing ever changes.

Eccl 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

But then the article goes on to say:

Our ideas about life also change. People once believed that the world was flat, but now we know that it is round.

If you apply this principle to buddhism, then the teachings of buddhism itself must be fluid, even this second "universal truth." Buddhism could be proved wrong by evidence not yet discovered. Buddhism may die out like the dinosaurs.

Our God never changes.

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

3. Law of Cause and Effect

The third universal truth explained by the Buddha is that there is continuous changes due to the law of cause and effect. This is the same law of cause and effect found in every modern science textbook. In this way, science and Buddhism are alike.

Again, sounds very scientific, until we get to:

The law of cause and effect is known as karma. Nothing ever happens to us unless we deserve it. We receive exactly what we earn, whether it is good or bad. We are the way we are now due to the things we have done in the past. Our thoughts and actions determine the kind of life we can have. If we do good things, in the future good things will happen to us. If we do bad things, in the future bad things will happen to us. Every moment we create new karma by what we say, do, and think. If we understand this, we do not need to fear karma. It becomes our friend. It teaches us to create a bright future.

No scientific textbook defines the law of cause and effect as karma. I don't think any secular scientists or psychologists would agree that we deserve everything that happens to us. That's certainly not consistent with Christianity anyway. Everyone deserves to go to hell, but by the grace of God, some go heaven, not because they deserve it but because Jesus saved them.

Stop making false claims and misrepresenting your religion. It looks to me like buddhism conveniently twists science to make its beliefs appear more credible to outsiders.
