I was just wondering that myself. I also questioned whether he thought someone would miss the edge if they were standing right next to it. I also wondered if Macrobian considered the circumstance where Jesus bends the light rays just so, in order for a mirage to show the edges of the desert? We know mirages of oasis and desert edges happen occasionally. But Macrobian probably doesn't know anything about the miracles Jesus performed. Bending light rays is a cinch compared to raising a dead girl.

It isn't a very big desert. It's large enough not to be seen at ground level, but tall enough to see the edges of the desert.

reverend, how to explain to my friend who insist we can prove earth is spherical by seeing sailboat on the sea? you might have heard this argument. she said that when we see a sailboat on the sea, the first thing appearing is its top, as it approaches us, the lower part of sailboat slowly revealed; that this won't happen if earth was flat. she said if earth were flat, the whole sailboats could always be seen, starting as a small dot which enlarges as it approaches us.
it is illogical!! but i'm not too bright to counter her...i've tried to tell these experiments to her, but she laughed at me!!
