They were numerous, nobody had any form of organised religion so each tribe had several Gods, and these Gods could be clustered and did not demand singularity from the others.

Then they killed off their 'Gods' one by one until there were just 3 or 4 left that the law could recognise. Including the God of the Jews (The God of Abraham) father of Jesus Christ etc, or Allah the God of Islam. So now we have about a dozen

Hundreds of years ago we saw a religious war break out, between the 'main' sectors of organised religions: Christianity and some splinter groups, moslems (sunni, shi'ite and independent from the Kurdistan area) and invaders spanning the deserts and plains of the Arab states.

So now after this latest round of warring we have 2 or 3 left just the main players everybody else accepts their once revered Gods were in fact just made up.

SO to conclude:
