Well maybe you should use your 'senses' rather than just reading the bible - after all the divine creator created us with the power to steward the world and the world has clearly changed with the creation of technology etc. thus requiring a different approach (not violence as has been used in the past - how about compassion and kindness?!). They thought they knew better than God.
God had told them what THE CERTAIN OUTCOME would be.
God did not want that outcome for His people. That is why He informed them of the consequences.
Notice in verse 3 that it is The Israelites themselves who kindle God's anger.
God does not dish out arbitrary injustice, that is exactly what He DOES NOT WANT TO HAPPEN.
His rulings are always just Deuteronomy 32:4.
