Well I thought "British" was a geographical descriptor, perhaps something like "African," whereas "English" or "Englander" denoted the political entity formerly known as Anglian, which now has a slightly different meaning.
The U.K. is a union of several States (something like the U.S. except they have a parliamentary democracy instead of a constitutional republic) one of which is England. I've never heard anyone refer to themselves as United Statesish for example.
