  • Is suicide forbidden by the bible?

I just read the incomparable essay "Of suicide" by Mr. David Hume, where he proves, that according to god, suicide is not wrong.

He declares that in the Bible there is no verse about suicide is bad (this is not the argument, just an statement from the essay).

Since you have a lot of free time and know the bible very well: is Mr. Hume statement true? Any counterexample?

    Thanks.

How about Exodus 20:13 to start? That doesn't seem ambiguous to me.

      From Mr. Hume:

It would be easy to prove, that Suicide is as lawful under the christian dispensation as it was to the heathens. There is not a single text of scripture, which prohibits it. That great and infallible rule of faith and practice, which must controul all philosophy and human reasoning, has left us, in this particular, to our natural liberty. Resignation to providence is, indeed, recommended in scripture; but that implies only submission to ills, which are unavoidable, not to such as may be remedied by prudence or courage. Thou shalt not kill is evidently meant to exclude only the killing of others, over whose life we have no authority. That this precept like most of the scripture precepts, must be modified by reason and common sense, is plain from the practice of magistrates, who punish criminals capitally, notwithstanding the letter of this law. But were this commandment ever so express against Suicide, it could now have no authority. For all the law of Moses is abolished, except so far as it is established by the law of nature; and we have already endeavoured to prove, that Suicide is not prohibited [Mil 589] by that law. In all cases, Christians and Heathens are precisely upon the same footing; and if Cato and Brutus, Arria and Portia acted heroically, those who now imitate their example ought to receive the same praises from posterity.

I don't know this Mr. Hume, but he is going to Hell. There may still be a chance for you.

Note that the Lord first makes it clear that you are the temple of God and then that nothing must happen to the temple of God. I think that's pretty clear, although as a papist you are well used to ignoring those commandments you don't like.

Now get rid of that Hume nonsense, the Romish cult, the idol worshipping and all your other sin and get right with Jesus before it's too late. It's that or join this Hume man in the fiery pit of Hell.

This is a prime example of the abominable depths that Satan's minions will stoop to gather the feeble-brained and easily led.

Just consider what David Hume has done... He has attempted to prove (and then says he has proven) something about God - even to attempt to "prove" something about God must be blasphemy, for it implies that there is some need for proof - as if there are those who doubt Him.

In this world there are two types of people
            1. True Christians who know there is a God and are inspired directly as to His Perfect Nature - it is proof because God inspires and God must exist because He inspires.
            2. Catholics, atheists, and perverts, (often the perverts and the Catholics are the same) who think that they can argue about the matter or seek deep in Scripture for faults and contradictions.

God, nor any aspect of Him, is not there to be "proven" - God requires no proof. God is. And that is the end of the matter.

We cannot even begin to comprehend the Mind of God - and if I can't do it, then you certainly can't.

I hope that this is an end to the matter.

Oh, don't be silly. There's not a single text of scripture which prohibits a man from snorting bath salts, running down the street naked, eating the face off a man sitting on the sidewalk, furiously shooting his seed at police as they try to pin him in a corner, and yet I should think it doesn't take one of the 12 Disciples of Jesus to recognize that goes against God's Will.

Even a foolish Catholic ought to realize that despair is the consequence of a lack of trust in Christ, and trust comes from belief. Without belief, one is damned (John 3:18).

The problem with Catholics is they believe that by increasingly secularizing their theology, they'll maintain some semblance of relevance in an increasingly progressive society. Well, nothing could be further from the Truth. Instead of maintaining relevance, the RCC has fostered a global corporation whose local representatives (priests) can be picked and chosen for the convenience of the lay person looking for a reason to excuse sin. As a capitalist venture it's just fine, but as a means to understand the LORD, it's completely ineffective.

Re: Is suicide forbidden by the bible?

Suicide is not a new idea. The Bible records seven suicides.
                  Abimelech
Judges 9:52-54 Abimelech lacked personal identity.
                  Samson
Judges 16:25-30 Samson died for a cause he believed in and for revenge.

                  Saul
1 Samuel 31:4 Saul was stressed out, unable to live up to certain expectations; felt rejected and a failureSaul's armor-bearer
1 Samuel 31:5 Impulse, he wanted to die with his boss. 40% of teenage suicide is impulse
                  .Ahithophel
2 Samuel 17:23 Ahithophel was bitter because his advice was not followed.
                  Zimri
1 Kings 16:15-20 Rebellion; Zimri had a problem with authority.
                  Judas
Matthew 27:3-5 Depressed, Judas felt trapped by materialism and guilt.
But what does the Bible say about taking your own life?
                  1. God has a great plan for your life. God has created us in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). He created us for a purpose. God has a specific plan in mind for everyone.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
                  2. God's plan is for life, not death. The Bible teaches that both physical and spiritual death are the result of our sin and disobedience to God, but eternal life is a gift to those who receive it.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).
                  3. Jesus taught that death and destruction are the work of “the thief” (Satan). He said,
The thief comes only to steal and destroy (John 10:10).
John 8:44 says that Satan is a “murderer” and the “father of lies.” The feelings of despair that lead to suicide are caused by some of his lies.
                  4. Jesus wants us to have life. He said:
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10).
                  5. Life belongs to God. It is never our place to take our own life or someone else's life.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
If suicide isn’t the answer, what is?
                  1. The solution to despair and hopelessness is not suicide, but faith in God.
We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you (Psalms 33:20-22).
                  2. Christ promises that He will give us rest from our problems.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).
                  3. Tell someone. Tell your parents, your brother or sister, your teacher or school counselor, your pastor or youth minister that you are thinking about suicide. If a friend tells you that he or she is serious about suicide, then you need to tell someone who is responsible and can help.
                  4. Accept Christ's free gift of eternal life and salvation, if you haven't already. Romans 10:13 says:
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
                    John 1:12 says:
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
                  5. When we accept Christ, God gives us a brand-new life and sees us as completely holy and righteous.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17).
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).
                  6. Because of God's salvation through the death of Jesus on the cross, we can have assurance of eternal life with God.
I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:24)

                  Proverbs 21:31 KJV 1611:
“The horse is prepared against the day of battell: but safetie is of the Lord.”

Lord, may I serve my equine brothers and sisters just as I do my fellow man.
                  Amen and Amen

You do not seem to have responded at all to my points above.

I find that rude and arrogant - but only to be expected of a Mary-worshiper who has absolutely no moral compass and no care for any other than himself.

Psalms:90:10: The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

If God allots you 70 or 80 years; if you commit suicide before then, you are rejecting God's Gift - which is blasphemy.

PS, if you are considering suicide, in your case, your final destination for all eternity is the same.

English is a second language so I had to read a translation of this psalm

I don't understand clearly what exactly means "the days of our years are seventy years" (excuse me, I had to read a translation). If the days of our aging is in days It should be expressed in days, not in years.

Now, I can interpret this in another way. In some obscure place, the days pass like 70 years, may be the psalm is talking about the hell?
