  • No-go zones in the Netherlands

    Fake news in Netherlands denies it but we all know it's true, especially the new US Ambassador. And what's with all the "gotcha" questions? The dope-smoking cheese-munching sex-crazed Dutch need to show some respect.

    Dutch TV catches out new envoy Pete Hoekstra on Islamic "no-go zones" claim.

    The new US ambassador to the Netherlands has been caught out on Dutch television after a journalist quizzed him about comments he had made about Islamic extremism in the country. Pete Hoekstra denied he had ever said there were "no-go zones" in the Netherlands, calling it "fake news".

    Zwart: Speaking of threat, at one point you mentioned in a debate that there are no-go zones in the Netherlands and that cars and politicians are being set on fire.

    Mr Hoekstra: I didn't say that. That is actually an incorrect statement. Yeah, we would call it fake news.

    Zwart: Is that fake news? Because that's what you really said.

    Mr Hoekstra: No, it's not what I said.

    Mr Hoekstra (on archive video): The Islamic movement has now got to the point where they have put Europe into chaos. Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burned, there are politicians that are being burned. And yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands.

    Zwart: You called it fake news, obviously... (is interrupted)

    Mr Hoekstra: I didn't call that fake news, I didn't use the words today.

    Zwart: No?

    Mr Hoekstra: No. I don't think I did.
    If I have seen further, it is by standing on the heads of others.

    Re: No-go zones in the Netherlands

    Ambassador Hoekstra (who has obviously adopted a Dutch family name for security purposes because there are no-go areas or not in the Netherlands) has given a very clear denial - I do not see what there is to complain about.

    There are far too many diplomats and politicians who refuse to say "yes" or "no" but remain ambiguous.

      Interesting that there are No-Go zones in the Netherlands considering the Netherlands are a giant No-go zone.

        The institutionalization of diplomacy has involved the development of a common language with ritualized phrases, which have allowed cross-cultural communication with a minimum of unnecessary misunderstanding. Courtesy, non-redundancy and constructive ambiguity are prominent features of diplomatic language.

        Each era appears to have its own set of ritualized phrases that enable diplomatic agents to communicate even unpleasant things with an amount of tact and courtesy. The principle of non-redundancy means that "a diplomatic communication should say neither too much nor too little because every word, nuance of omission will be meticulously studied for any shade of meaning" (Cohen, 1981: 32). Constructive ambiguity avoids premature closure of options. Circumlocution, such as understatements and loaded omissions, permits controversial things to be said in a way understood in the diplomatic community but without needless provocation (Cohen, 1981: 32-4).

          To twist words like that! Where would Europe be without America?

          I was reminded of Titus Andronicus:

          . . . . . ACT III scene 1 201ff
          Tit.
          .. Good Aaron, give his majesty my hand:
          . . .Tell him it was a hand that warded him
          . . .From thousand dangers; bid him bury it;
          . . .More hath it merited; that let it have.
          . . .As for my sons, say I account of them
          . . .As jewels purchas’d at an easy price;
          . . .And yet dear too, because I bought mine own.
          Aar. I go, Andronicus; and for thy hand,
          . . .Look by and by to have thy sons with thee.
          . . .[Aside.] Their heads, I mean. O! how this villany
          . . .Doth fat me with the very thoughts of it.
          . . .Let fools do good, and fair men call for grace,
          . . .Aaron will have his soul black like his face. [Exit. Tit.]
