Re: Bill O'Reilly OWNS Atheist: "You can't explain the tides!"

If the moon was able to pull water to one side, it would rush over the firmament to the bowels of the Earth. Secondly, my glass of water kept by my bedside would be fallen on its' side every day when I wake. This has never happened. So with the gift that God gave me of sight, I can say with 100% certainty that the moon does not 'pull water to one side or bulge in the glass'.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Such an obvious point. Why didn't we all think of that? Only a True Christian(tm) could have come up with such an elegant proof!

I agree that people shouldn't follow what people say blindly. That's why I believe in seeing proof. I for one think that believing what was written in a book around 1800 years ago is all the proof we need.

Everybody on this thread is arguing that Dave Silverman offered no proof that the moon causes the tides but not one person has even attempted to prove that it is god's doing, other than referring to what some Greek bloke wrote in a book 1800 years ago. Really?

Most religious people I know are smart and level headed but everyone on this forum is nothing more than an oxygen thief.
          Most religious people are hellbound:

Matt. 7:13-14: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Matt. 7:21-23: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Oh, and your mum touches kids.
What can I possibly say in the face of such a meticulously reasoned argument for the falsity of our faith?

Yup. How much do the oceans weigh? Probably thousands of tons. If the 'gravity' of the moon supposedly lifts up thousands of tons of ocean by several feet, why doesn't it lift up the 8 ounces of water in my glass even an inch? The water should be all over my ceiling, but no. Sadly, simple logic escapes all of these delusional scientific types. They're like some brain-washed cult.

Re: Bill O'Reilly OWNS Atheist: "You can't explain the tides!"

Firstly, I will state that I do believe in Jesus. So I am not technically an atheist. But I do want to make myself clear that I also believe in perception of reality and experimental proof. I am indeed in the studies of applied sciences, a mechanical engineer, and therefore my mind must work within the constraints of physical reality. I must leave my personal believes in my heart. If I were to act 100% according to the words within the Bible, I fear I, along with many other engineers, my cause harm, even injury, to the common man. You cannot truly believe that “things always happen because of God”. It is illogical. However, I strongly agree that the human race SHOULD believe in a Greater presence. Hope is a wonderful tool, along with love, care and understanding. All of these feelings enable us to do good things for society. And after all, this is the code in which I must learn and practise in my career, to protect the common man. That is why we learn things such as the Factor of Safety, which is simply a multiple that protects the individual.
With that aside, I am not here to change your believes, or tell you that you are wrong, yada yada. All I want to do is give you my opinion, which is within my right as a fellow Christian. In my short time on Earth, I have experienced many things with my five senses. I can see depth in water; I can feel heat on a stove. The Bible says these abilities were gifts given from God. But it doesn’t explain what heat is. Later I learn of the first Law of Thermodynamics which clearly and physically explains the concept of heat. I ask myself, how come none of these Laws are stated within the Bible? Well because the ones who wrote the Bible weren’t scientists. That’s fine; it wasn’t their line of work. But to discredit a scientist based on no evidence is not fair and ignorant. At least a scientist will make a claim only after proving it with experimental data. However, many Christians, and any follower of religion for that matter, will make a claim without any substantial evidence, such as the one Mr. O’Reilly has made. This is a grave mistake. Did you know that most of your judicial system is based on the words of the Bible? Well we have a major contradiction here. He is innocent until proven guilty without a reasonable doubt. That reasonable doubt comes from substantial evidence. You can’t simply state that the Earth is flat, or is only x-amount of years old just because a book told you that. Or that God told someone that He created the tides and the Moon and that they behave with one another in the matter in which they do simply because He said so and He doesn’t need to explain himself. You need physical data to prove physical phenomena. Yes I know you’re going to say the same thing about science textbooks. But all of those facts have been physically proven. And the best way to do this is scientifically experimentation.
Do you honestly, in your heart, feel that the answers to all of your problems or questions lie in God? Would he truly want you to be that helpless? Come on, have some confidence in the ability of yourelf and your fellow man. The very liquid crystal display you are reading this post through is a perfect example that God is just a philosophical representation of hope and believe, and nothing more. He can’t, and did not, physically create anything, save maybe the Big Bang, but that discussion is far beyond this topic. What God has done is allow us to create hope and believe that our will is what allows us to create technology, relationships, and families. Now if you look at the big picture, sure I guess you can accredit God for all of our great things based on this statement, but it has no physical representation. You can’t fill a glass up with hope. You can however fill it with water, which was not created by God. It is a physical representation of hydrogen and oxygen. Jesus, along with Zeus, Allah and any other philosophical images are just figures we use to represent our trust in hope, that’s it. Please don’t confuse physical reality with religion. They are two separate entities. Doing that leads to miscommunication and the lack of use of our common sense, this can lead to much more devastating things such as war. I get burned from touching a hot stove because the molecules within the element are moving so fast, they cause a temperature increase which is then transferred to my hand, which is at a cooler, and less active molecular state. God wasn’t mad at me so he burned me. Come on.
                -Sean

btw, Jesus is my dawg! We're tight like hallways all day son!

Who are you to tell me what I do and do not believe in? Never once in my post did I tell you what to believe in or what not to believe in. I just simply reminded you to trust your internal primal instincts and not to confuse these feelings with hope or religion. They are different. I believe that Jesus lies within a book I read, called the Bible, and that the story of him tells of great achievements. But that’s it. Jesus didn’t decide one day to make water rise and fall periodically. Where in the Bible does it say Jesus, or God, invented the concept of tidal waters? It doesn’t, come on. Besides, tidal movements have been happening far before Jesus was born. Oh yeah, that’s right, according to you the Earth is flat and only 500 miles from the sun! Here’s an idea, go turn on your stove, wait 7 min. Touch it. Imagine that concept of heat the multiply it by 10^10. If the Sun was 500 miles away, that magnitude I think still wouldn’t justify the heat the Sun’s radiation would give off. Are you kidding me? I can picture Jesus any freaking way I want to just the same as you. And no one, including you, can tell me otherwise. You call yourself a Reverend? My pastor never told me I don’t believe in Jesus. Only I can answer that statement. But one thing you can’t tell people is that the Earth is flat! Come on man. You clearly can see a spherical shape to our planet when photographed from outer space. Do you use a cell phone? Those things don’t work because of “magic” or God. They work because of satellites. The very same objects that have photographed your “flat” Earth. You tell me to go back a read my post again? How about you go back to school and listen to your teachers my friend.

Re: Bill O'Reilly OWNS Atheist: "You can't explain the tides!"

You people make sick to be a Christian, you know that? You're all blinded by the light just like the Atheists are blinded by darkness.

Most things I've read in this thread are just the Radical Christians bumbling on and on and on about how it all works because God says it does. The Bible doesn't explain tides. The Bible doesn't explain heat. The Bible doesn't explain why there are other religions. The Bible doesn't explain why my neighbor lives next to me. It certainly doesn't explain why we all hate each other so much. It gives everyone who follows it's words exactly a REASON to hate each other. I'm sure you've all heard of Westboro Baptist Church. They mock people who give their lives to defend their un-helpful asses. Can't any of you people learn toleration? I'm a devout Christian and I have atheist friends, jewish friends, muslim friends, you name it. Two of my sisters are Atheist and the other agnostic.

Now, pray tell, do you all honestly believe that God just dropped water onto Earth? Does that explain why there are tides? Certainly not. The "Bathtub Theory" is obviously a load of bull. Ever spill water onto a hardwood floor? It spreads everywhere. Why isn't there just water hanging around outside the ocean, then? Lakes? No, people. Lakes are 25 feet deep. Some are over a mile deep. Spill a pale of water on the beach. The water goes down about 1 inch. The hypothesis would then be "If you drop 25,000,000 pales of water onto the beach then the indent would 25,000,000 inches deep." That's over sand, kiddo. Dump a pale of water in a forest. The soil absorbs it and the weight of the water barely pushes the ground down a millimeter.

Earth being flat. No no. You would really have to be an idiot or from before the 1400s. Ever heard of Ferdinand Magellan? He was captain of the first crew to circumnavigate the world (despite him dying in the Philippines). Those inventions called "Airplanes" are pretty swell, aren't they? Why, going from NYC to Japan, and then Japan to NYC in one way is certainly easy and quite possible, isn't it?

The Sun being 500 miles away from Earth. If you believe it, then may God have mercy on your soul. You might as well be damned for stupidity. Are you aware that London is 3471 miles away from NYC? Check a map if you don't believe me. No no, go ahead, i'm waiting....you done? Now, think of the distance between Detroit and NYC. That's 488 miles on land, just 12 miles shy of 500. Look up at the sky. Can you believe that the distance from Earth to the Sun is 500 miles? I'd be astonished if the distance from Venus to Earth is 500 miles.

I'm not uneducated and i'm not Radical, but I do believe in God and the Christian Religion. All you Radicals follow blindly what you read in a book. Me? I have my own take on History, be it right or wrong. I believe God sets everything in motion, not creating everything. God created the non-manmade elements which bond together by themselves and which we use our Frontal Lobes to understand. Ever wonder why we work out so well? You know, the human race? I have. Thousands and thousands of lightyears away, there are Galaxies with probably other races of "animals". Those were God's "failed attempts". It takes time, effort, and practice to do something perfect, right? Even then, we the human race are significantly flawed to the point where we'll all try to kill each other over greed and whatnot.

Who knows, soon enough God'll make a new a galaxy with a better species? Like the other guy said, God/Allah/whatever is just a representation of hope. Oh no, I said Allah. Sure, I don't believe it, but others do. So, do what you want. Don't read this comment, flame me, mods/Admins ban me. I just wanted this point across. You radicals me sick and ashamed, though. I can honestly say I understand why our Church is mocked so often. People like you.
