The fact that this thread has actually received support is astounding.

Your daughter should not marry the SCUM that raped her, and quite frankly any group - religous or otherwise - that says she should, is in no way preaching the message of god - love and forgiveness (so i've heard)

So "Stud" boy, riddle me this: if your wife was raped by another man (let's say some stranger on the street just comes up to her, beats her, and takes her right there) would she have to divorce you to marry the other man? Would she now be a defiled slut? Do you think it would be any less humiliating whether she's a virgin or a wife or anything else? First and foremost, she's a woman who has been transgressed against in unspeakable ways, and it's because of the lack of compassion in you people toward your fellow man that you can talk so shamelessly about rape as if it were something so insignificant.

I do not understand how this has ANYTHING to do with the girl's feelings. We're talking about God's law here! If we took everyone's feelings into account every time then there would be a LOT more sinning in the world. There are too many "feel gooders" in the world as it is! What was she doing near a rapist anyway?

I would think the solution would have been to have stayed in her home helping her mother in the kitchen!

No one her advocates the crime (yea, crime) of rape (though in some circumstances, it is not rape - you know this to be true when talking of harlots). But, once the issue has occurred, there are Biblical ramifications and resolutions. These must be followed lest the woman is damaged goods forever. Is it that had to understand? You got on the Internets, you can type somewhat, I'd think then you would have half a brain.

In a statement, the victim's mother said: 'What happened to my daughter was a nightmare. These convictions will help us move on.'

Detective Inspector Noel McHugh, who led the investigation, said the sentences should bring closure to a 'really awful crime'.

He said: ‘This has been an exceptionally challenging investigation and we are grateful to all those who assisted with the case and ensured the convictions.’

An Indian man accused of raping a girl has married his alleged victim in a religious ceremony in a temple within the compound of a law court.

Kamalnath Patel, a 22-year-old farmer, offered to marry the girl during the trial in Madhya Pradesh state.

He is accused of kidnapping and raping her two years ago, when she was 16.

Prosecutors said the marriage may mean the court takes a more lenient view if Mr Patel is convicted. Campaigners called the marriage "shameful".

The issue of rape still attracts a lot of stigma in India - in most cases members of the public blame the victim for the crime committed against her.

A court in the central city of Jabalpur has been hearing the case for the last couple of months. The next hearing is on Saturday.

Special public prosecutor Umesh Vaidya said the "court may take cognisance of the fact that the accused has married the alleged victim".

Mr Vaidya said: "Family members from both sides had told the court during the last hearing that they wanted the boy and the girl to get married."

He said the court would be informed of the wedding at the next hearing.

An eyewitness said the marriage was solemnised in the presence of the girl's family members, although Mr Patel's father refused to participate in the ceremony.

The couple were to appear before the registrar of marriages on Wednesday to have their marriage registered.

'Distressing'

Women rights' activist, Kiran Walia*, called the marriage "shameful".

"It is more distressing since the court was aware of the impending wedding plan," Ms Walia said.

Last year, a Delhi court asked a nurse to consider a marriage proposal from a man who had been convicted of raping and assaulting her.

Women's groups, including the National Commission for Women, criticised the court for even entertaining such a proposal.

The nurse rejected the offer and the judge gave her attacker a life sentence. Rape cases have been rising steadily in India although a large number of them still go unreported.
