Well, from what I understand, the Irish see potatoes as a great way to control exaggerated population growth. I suppose that's why they worship them.

But, I could be wrong. I couldn't find any reference to potatoes in the Holy Bible, so I avoid eating them. They could have been made by the Devil. (That would be yet another reason why the Irish worship them).
