False. No one knows. Popular misconception says its when you take the fingers of one hand and slap it against its own palm.

Here is the actual koan: A sound is made when two hands hit each other, producing a clap. What then, is the sound of just one hand clapping? If there is a sound, why do we need the other hand? And if there is no sound, then the other hand produces no sound, therefore how could sound come out of two hands not making any sounds?
