Last month some of these vicious delinquents were grinding the curbs outside of the studio with their skateboards. They were sliding and grinding all over the place and there was no accountability. I had the Colonel* go outside and bear mace their genitals. As they ran away he tackled them on the pavement. He then dragged all three of their sorry butts into the studio where we duct taped them to office chairs and pushed them down a flight of stairs. I don't think those kids are going to be "shredding the gnar" anymore, now that their legs are all broken.

*The Colonel is a belligerent, slightly insane old man that just showed up one day ten or fifteen years ago-- no one knew who he was, and he hasn’t left since. Well you know, I wasn't there and I didn't see everything that happened so I can't really comment.

But it sounds to me like a case of some concerned citizens deending public property (and possibly themselves) from punks and queers.

Self-defense is defined as an exertion of physical force against an immediate threat that is proportionate to what the defender believes is about to befall himself or somebody else.

In this case, it sounds like that's exactly what happened. You saw a threat on wheels, so you used wheels to neutralize the situation.

But like I said, I wasn't there and I couldn't comment.

I'd suggest you put on your reading glasses before you post, to avoid such embarrassments in future ) on a rail, it is called grinding not 'railing'.
The skateboarders (note, skateBOARDERS not, skater boys. It may surprise you to know that many females skate professionally and as a hobby, and to add to the shock and awe, I am one of them!) who ride these rails are some of the most ballsy (haha) people that I know. Let's just put this in perspective. These guys are riding down a handrail, at an average 15-20 mph, on a thin plank of wood with four small wheels attached to it. That in itself is a fantastic notion. To have the know-how and experience on top of that is incredibly commendable, in my humble book. Although it may seem to the untrained eye that these people are 'defacing' property, to the 'trained' or skateboarder's eye they are creating a whole new style of physical art based purely on physics and turing the concrete jungle which we have created for our societies, into a playground full of different objects and obstacles.
Skateboarding has long since evolved past the 'punk' mentality that it one wore during the 70's and 80's, from whence you good people would more than likely have first encountered said sport. Now-a-days (in the big, wide, round world) we understand that such activities can have an incredibly positive effect on a growing person's mind and well-being; including increased social interaction, creative and emotional expression and most importantly, physical fitness.
As a full-time Skateboard Coach, I, more than many skateboarders understand and recognize the amazing impact that skateboarding has had and will continue to have on so many lives. I spend my days teaching children how to skateboard. Some of these kids aren't particularly good at running or basketball (or any other 'school time' sport activities) but take an absolute love for skateboarding. It is a mix of the sheer exhilaration of riding a board and being able to perform stunts after only an hour or two, and the thrill of sharing it with their close friends.
Unfortunately, bad news is good news, and we don't tend to hear about the amazing and commendable qualities that skateboarding has on young lives. A few rotten eggs (skateboarders that is) make it into the news or give attitude to police or pedestrians, and people automatically think that it is an attack on themselves or society itself. What is important to understand is that due to so many of these kids having childhood issues and built-up anger, they look to a place where they can release, express themselves in totality and push themselves to the absolute limit. They turn to skateboarding because it is the perfect outlet, and they get to express and share that with their own friends; as they feel like the rest of the world has turned its back on them. The anger in reaction to you telling them off on the pavement is purely an extension of that, and is unfortunately, a very vicious circle.
I do ask that you delve further into the positive physical aspects and notions of skateboarding if you do intend to continue this argument. Two of my favorite skateboard videos are Chlorine: A Pool Skating Documentary - which is about the birth of transition-based skateboarding in America in the late 50's-60's - and Tic Tac to Heelflip, which is about the history of skateboarding in Australia. These concluded with Dogtown and Z-Boys will at least give you a running start on what skateboarding is about and what it entails, then and now.
