Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
Picture the disk of the Earth with the north pole in the center, the lines of longitude radiating out, and the parallels of latitude as concentric circles surrounding the north pole. The equator will be the circle with exactly half the diameter of the entire disk. What we call "north" means towards the center, "south" means towards the edge, and "east/west" mean counterclockwise/clockwise.

Now picture the sun as a directed spotlight hanging above it by a cord. The sun is focused so that about half of the area of the Earth is illuminated at a time. Now, because it's a directed light, there is a circle of daylight below it, which fades to twilight at the edges, and then darkness of night beyond.
Now imagine God gives the sun a little smack so that it makes a clockwise circle over the disk of the Earth. From the surface of the disk of the Earth, looking up, the sun will appear to move east to west across the sky. That's why it's dark in Peking, China when it's light in Freehold, Iowa.
I'm sure you know that when you swing a pendulum like that, it starts out making wide circles, and then as it loses energy, the circles get smaller and smaller. When the circles are wider, the light from the sun falls more brightly on the outer half of the circle (the southern "hemisphere"), and it is summer in Australia but winter in North America. When the circles are smaller, then it is summer in North America and winter in Australia. Then every year on Christmas day, when the circle is as small as God wants to let it get, God gives the sun another smack and starts the cycle all over again.
Some of the more astute readers may have a question at this point. If the parallels of latitude are ever-widening concentric circles, and if the lines of longitude radiate out from the north pole, then shouldn't places in the southern hemisphere be much further apart than they are? Why do South America and Africa seem so close together?
That question had me stumped for a while, but the answer comes from our good friend Albert Einstein (who, as you know, repented on his death bed and became a born-again Christian). The answer comes from the special theory of Relativity. You see, the Earth is a large gravity well, and the north pole is at the center of it. As you move away from the center, time speeds up and the energy cost for movement becomes reduced, so you can move increasing distances in less time for the same energy. If you are using a classical physics model, looking at the relative time and energy spent, then it would appear exactly as if you were moving at a constant velocity.
As you move towards the edge of the Earth, the distances between the lines of longitude become greater and greater in actuality, but due to the effects of relativity they actually seem to become less and less. Finally at the very edge, you reach an event horizon where the entire edge seems to collapse into a single point that we call the south pole.
