Breaking: Cult Leader Wayne Bent Arrested

State Police this morning arrested cult leader Wayne C. Bent, 67, and charged him with three counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and are now interviewing Bent in Clayton, state Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson told the Journal's Thomas J. Cole.

Bent, who is being held at the Union County Detention Center in Clayton, is also charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Clayton Police Sgt. Bobbie Long told The Associated Press. Cole broke the story last week that New Mexico child welfare workers removed several children from a northeastern New Mexico doomsday cult run by Bent, who was known to his followers as Michael Travesser, for alleged inappropriate contact.

Bent, who last Oct. 31 predicted the end of the world, says he is the second coming of Jesus, according to Cole's earlier story. He has acknowledged having sex with followers and being with "virgins that laid upon my bed, naked," but denied having sex with the young girls, the Journal has reported.

Bent and some 50 followers in The Lord Our Righteousness Church relocated from Arizona in 2000 to rural Union County to establish a community called Strong City, or Travesser, Cole reported. Strong City is the subject of a National Geographic Channel documentary titled "Inside a Cult World" that will be broadcast Wednesday at 8 p.m. local time on Comcast Channel 52. The documentary shows two young females who tell of lying naked with Bent but whose ages were not disclosed, the Journal reported.

On December 1, Wayne Bent’s attorney filed a 67 page motion in the New Mexico Supreme Court, arguing for his release on bond pending the outcome of the state’s appeal. The motion cited Mr. Bent’s successful appeal before the Court of Appeals, and the fact that his two alleged “victims” do not consider themselves as such, and do not want him to be in prison.

Even though his convictions were tossed out by the Court of Appeals in June, Mr. Bent remains incarcerated at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility, serving an 18 year sentence imposed at the end of his 2008 trial. At issue in that trial were the methods of touch he used to heal two underaged females in a religious ritual. Both had testified they were not touched sexually or abused by Mr. Bent. The case was the focus of a media feeding frenzy in New Mexico at the time.

A jury convicted Bent of the felonies for lying in bed with naked 14- and 16-year-old sisters in separate incidents in 2006. There is a documentary: End of the World Cult broadcast on Dec. 12, 2007, British TV station Channel 4 a documentary about Michael Travesser (real name: Wayne Bent) -- leader of Strong City (more recently referred to as "The Lord Our Righteousness Church").

The group's followers believe that 'Michael, the Spirit of the Son of God' lives in Wayne Bent.

Strong City is a cult, as defined both theologically and sociologically [See the difference between the theological and the sociological definitions of the term 'cult'].

Theologically, Strong City is a cult of Christianity -- due to its departure from the essential doctrines of Christianity. In addition, the cult's practices included many cult-like elements (sociologically), and fall outside the norms of acceptable Christian behavior.

Measured by the essential doctrines of the Christian faith, cult leader Michael Travesser -- real name, Wayne Bent -- is consider to be a heretic.

Michael Travesser says he’s the Messiah and that God has told him the world will end with an apocalyptic event at midnight on 31 October 2007.

As leader of a cult in a remote corner of New Mexico called Strong City, this 66-year-old former sailor, previously called Wayne Bent, has spent nearly 20 years preparing his 56 unquestioning and devoted followers for Doomsday. They say they are all preparing for death, to go to a better place.

In this Channel 4 programme, filmmaker Ben Anthony goes into the heart of the cult to discover how Michael exerts his influence. He hears teenage girls talking about desiring sex with their leader, discovers that this sexual activity extended to Travesser’s own daughter-in-law, and meets parents who have left the cult and are desperately trying to prise their children from his grip. Strong City has come to the attention of the FBI, who are keeping a watchful eye on the group.

It's like they think they can make up anything just about plausible but a bit remarkable, nick a few familiar sounding ideas from existing beliefs, throw in a bit of cod mysticism from the back of a cereal packet, some gripes to fit the prejudices of the times and paste it all together to make a coherent story that holds water for long enough to fool the gullible. What are the chances of something like that going mainstream? None, but they keep on trying.
