The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2016 to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his resolute efforts to bring the country's more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220 000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people. The award should also be seen as a tribute to the Colombian people who, despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace, and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace process.

Obviously some new definition of peace I missed out on. What happened next? At the time of announcing the civil war was going full tilt, the cartels were raking it in big-time and the government's peace initiative was flailing around like hassidim on the dance floor so I checked it out here:

Colombia’s congress approved a historic peace deal with the country’s largest rebel group on Wednesday night, raising hopes that Latin America’s longest war was finally ending.

The vote came two months after voters narrowly rejected a similar peace accord in a nationwide referendum. But after making changes to the pact, President Juan Manuel Santos decided to get it approved by lawmakers. The war, which started in 1964, has left at least 220,000 dead and drove 7 million people from their homes.

The 130-to-0 decision by the lower house, which came one day after the senate approved the agreement, paves the way for guerrilla fighters to lay down their weapons and enter the political arena. Opponents of the peace deal abstained from voting.

Opponents of the peace deal abstained from voting. So the outcome would seem a bit one sided. What other parties are involved? There are alternative militias, drug cartels, the army (who are now protecting FARC, a former guerilla operation) to name but three.

Ejército de Liberación Nacional The left-wing group was formed in 1965 by students, Catholic radicals and left-wing intellectuals inspired by the Cuban revolution and Marxist ideology. It was long seen as more politically motivated than the FARC, for example the ELN stayed out of the illegal drug trade for a long period of time on ideological grounds. ELN operates mainly in north-eastern Colombia.

Autodefendas Unidas de Colombia The AUC.–.commonly referred to as the paramilitaries.–.is an umbrella organization formed in April 1997 to consolidate most local and regional paramilitary groups each with the mission to protect economic interests and combat FARC and ELN insurgents locally. During 2002, the AUC leadership dissolved and then subsequently reconstituted most of the organization.

Los Urabeños [A LEFTIST PERSPECTIVE] On March 30, Los Urabeños, Colombia’s largest right-wing paramilitary group, distributed leaflets across the north of the country calling for a “pacific strike.” The next day, the streets of many towns and cities were virtually deserted. Businesses and schools were closed, and people stayed home for fear of violence. Their concerns were warranted. Paramilitaries staged dozens of attacks on security forces, injuring several police officers, and in the days that followed they mounted assaults in neighborhoods across the country, including Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city.

If there was any doubt about who controls much of the nation’s territory, the “pacific strike” dispelled it: right-wing militants, not the Colombian state, have the monopoly on violence in significant swaths of the country. That worries the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), the militant group currently in peace talks with the government after decades of waging armed struggle against the Colombian state. In a country where leftists have often been assassinated by state forces, paramilitaries, or cartels, FARC members say they’ll meet the same fate if they put down their guns and the paramilitaries remain armed. The government claims that all paramilitaries have demobilized and that the remaining groups are nothing more than “criminal bands” who will not receive a peace deal.

Was Colombia peaceful before the Farc? No.

The Government “There needs to be a balance between peace and justice, but in this agreement there’s complete impunity,” Uribe, now a senator, said during the senate debate. Other senators accused him of standing in the way of a peace deal that he pursued with the Farc as president in 2002-10. Santos said ratification would set in motion the start of a six-month process in which the Farc’s 8,000-plus guerrillas will concentrate in some 20 rural areas and turn over their weapons to United Nations monitors. “Tomorrow a new era begins,” he said on Wednesday. But the rebels insist their troops won’t start demobilising until politicians pass an amnesty law freeing some 2,000 rebels in jail. “D-Day starts after the first actions are implemented,” the rebel leader Pastor Alape, part of the Farc’s 10-member secretariat, said last week after the new accord was signed. “The president unfortunately has been demonstrating an attitude that creates confusion in the country.”

The Cartels Wilmer Ovalle’s life is a testament to the failure of the war on drugs in Colombia. Standing among bright green bushes of coca on a steep hillside of this remote village in north-eastern Colombia, he sprays weedkiller around the base of each bush. In two weeks the leaves will be just the right size for picking and processing into coca paste, the first stage in the production of cocaine. “If the drug war had worked I wouldn’t be standing here,” he says.

At 19, Ovalle has known both the carrots and the sticks that have been the backbone of Colombia’s counter-drugs strategy for the past two decades to cut supplies to large drug trafficking organisations. He remembers as a child when crop dusters repeatedly used herbicide to destroy his father’s crops near the town of Tibú – and how his father would replant them. Eventually, tired of being targeted for spraying, Ovalle’s father moved the family deep into a nature reserve – where fumigation is off limits – cut down virgin forest and planted coca. Ovalle also remembers government promises of helping farmers substitute their coca for legal crops. “They told us to pull up the coca and we would get help to grow and sell other things,” Ovalle says. “We did but the help never came..”

Can this pot-pourri ever deliver peace? It would certainly seem very unlikely, and there is a reason why. Reading through that material I noticed one glaring omission; nowhere did I see the name of Jesus. In one swoop, admittedly quite a big one which would take a short while to reach every poisonous tree responsible for this imbroglio, the problem may be solved. It doesn't come from Norway and it doesn't come from Spain. The agony could vanish just like storm clouds after rain. I read through quite a lot to pick the few I've posted here, there's links to antecedents so the problem is quite clear. This is not the Hand of God.

While the Nobel Committee's definition of what constitutes "peace" is certainly different from what everyone else's, it's not really "new."

In 2009, they awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama, basically for being the first black man elected as US president. His vision of peace includes killing as many people as possible using drones:

Whereas President George W. Bush authorized approximately 50 drone strikes that killed 296 terrorists and 195 civilians in Yemen, Pakistan and Somalia, Obama has authorized 506 strikes that have killed 3,040 terrorists and 391 civilians...

There remain troubling, unanswered aspects of drone strikes, in particular how the policy of “signature strikes”— killing anonymous men who appear to be associated with terrorist or militant armies through observable behavior — comport with the bedrock principle of distinction founded in international humanitarian law. That the United States does not know who it targets with drones is made glaringly obvious from the fact that of eight U.S. citizens killed in U.S. drone strikes, only one was knowingly targeted: Anwar al-Awlaki.

In 1994, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin - and depending on whom you ask, one, two, or all three of them committed things which fall under the definition of crimes against humanity - before and after receiving the award.

Other ridiculous recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize (listed under the first link) include Gorbachev (1990, for imploding the USSR, I suppose; however, he continued to commit crimes against humanity after receiving the award) and Mother Teresa (1979 - for turning poor, sick, unhappy people into poor, sick, but happy ones). There's also a bunch of other people I've never heard about, so they must not be relevant.

The only one Nobel Peace Prize that was truly deserved was the one given to Henry Kissinger (1973) - because nothing is more peaceful than ordering to bomb the party you're negotiating with during a bilateral truce or cooperating with South American dictators on the issue of assassinations of their political enemies, right?

I don't change oil for a living. Oil is already valuable. What would I change it to and why would I want to do that?

Do you ever wonder, Sister, whether this series of errors led to your unmarried status?

I was home-schooled by my mother and grandmother and am happy to report that I don't even know what a community college is. Some secular US thing, I suppose.

I pose that question to myself on a regular basis, Sister Joanna. Given the liberal, lesbian culture that permeated the place, I would be a candidate for being burnt at the stake, if not for Jesus' grace.

I was home-schooled by my mother and grandmother and am happy to report that I don't even know what a community college is. Some secular US thing, I suppose.
