Nobel-winning Russian physicist dies at 93

MOSCOW — Vitaly Ginzburg, a Nobel prize-winning Russian physicist and one of the fathers of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, has died in Moscow. He was 93.

Ginzburg died late Sunday of cardiac arrest, the Russian Academy of Sciences said Monday.

Ginsburg won the 2003 Nobel Prize in physics with two other scientists for their contribution to theories on superconductivity, the ability of some materials to conduct electricity without resistance.

In the early 1950s, Ginzburg worked on the government project that developed the Soviet hydrogen bomb, for which he won the Stalin prize and was showered with benefits and accolades.

In a career that spanned seven decades, Ginzburg authored several groundbreaking studies in various fields — such as quantum theory, astrophysics, radio-astronomy and diffusion of cosmic radiation in the Earth's atmosphere — that were of "Nobel Prize caliber," said Gennady Mesyats, the director of the Lebedev Physics Institute in Moscow, where Ginzburg worked.

"I can hardly list all the fields of physics to which he contributed ," Mesyats said in televised comments Monday.

Ginzburg was born into a Jewish family in 1916, a year before the Bolshevik Revolution, and grew up in times of economic degradation and hunger, according to his autobiography written for the Nobel Prize Committee.

His career began in the late 1930s, a time of Stalinist purges and pervasive anti-Semitism. Ginzburg was blacklisted and faced persecution, but "was saved by the hydrogen bomb," he wrote in the autobiography.

He became a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1953. He also was a longtime editor of a leading scientific magazine on theoretical physics and educated hundreds of disciples.

A vehement atheist, Ginzburg strongly opposed the growing role of the Russian Orthodox Church in state affairs after the 1991 Soviet collapse, protesting its attempts to have a say in political and secular matters and introduce religious lessons in schools.

"By teaching religion in schools, these Orthodox scoundrels want to lure away children's souls," he told a Russian newspaper in 2007.

Several Orthodox Christian groups threatened to sue him for "offending millions of Russian Christians."

After receiving the Nobel prize, Ginzburg said he had given up hope of winning it after having been nominated regularly for the past 30 years. "I had long ago forgotten to think about this," he said.

Despite his age, Ginzburg remained active as a scientist and public figure. He also was a staunch believer in the global triumph of democracy and "secular humanism" to help overcome such threats as Islamic terrorism, poverty and AIDS.

"I am still inclined to believe in the brilliant future of mankind," he said in the autobiography.

Gerhardt "Jerry" Fuchs, a prolific drummer for bands including !!!, the Juan MacLean and Maserati, died early Sunday after falling down an elevator shaft in a loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn late Saturday night.

Fuchs, 34, had been attending a party hosted by the Uniform Project, which promotes sustainable fashion and raises money for education in India.

Fuchs and a friend were in an elevator in a converted factory used as loft space when the elevator stopped "somewhere above the fifth floor," the Buildings Department spokesman told the New York Post.

The pair opened the elevator door and attempted to jump a few feet down to the fifth floor. The friend made the jump, but a piece of Fuchs' clothing was caught on the elevator, "sending him swinging back into the crevice separating the elevator from the fifth floor," the Post writes.

Fuchs fell five stories to the bottom of the elevator shaft, where he lay "unconscious and unresponsive," reports Gothamist.

The musician was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and died early this morning surrounded by "an entire waiting room of friends," according to Chunklet, to which Fuchs was a contributor.

Fuchs grew up in Marietta, Georgia, moving to Athens, then New York in the mid-90s, drumming for bands including Vineland and Turing Machine. More recently, he moved back and forth between Athens and New York, playing for the DFA bands !!! and the Juan MacLean, and replacing the original drummer in the Athens-based band Maserati. The first drummer, Mikel Gius, also died in a tragic accident in 2005 after being hit by a car while riding his bike.

Maserati had just wrapped up a tour for their September album, 'Passages.'

Fuchs is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters, and, as Fuchs' friend and Chunklet publisher Henry Owings writes in a tribute, "an impressive canon of records on which he's performed, countless mouth-agape audiences in awe of his work, dozens of heart-crushed former bandmates, and an endless parade of true friends around the world."

Heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, his wife has said. Writing on his official website, Wendy Dio said the former Rainbow and Black Sabbath singer was in the early stages of the illness. Mrs Dio added he was starting treatment immediately and would be back on stage after "he kills this dragon".

Dio, 67, had to cancel his band's European tour last week after he became unwell and was taken to hospital. "Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic," Mrs Dio said. "After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans." Mrs Dio also thanked fans for their well wishes, adding: "This has really helped to keep his spirit up."

Dio first achieved recognition singing with his own band Elf before joining Rainbow in 1975. He later replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1979 for three years. He is currently working on a project with former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice, under the name Heaven & Hell.

Yegor Gaidar died a few days ago. Few people will have heard of him: he was Russian. Normally, it would not be a great surprise to see a commie here. But this man was different for two reasons:

1. He brought capitalism to Russia. Gaidar abolished state price regulation to create a market economy, thus causing a major increase in prices in Russia, which, nevertheless ultimately saved the country both from bankruptcy and from starvation. He also cut military procurement and industrial subsidies, and reduced the budget deficit. All this equaled the end of communism. As we all know Freedom = Capitalism = Godliness.

2. The next great idea he gave the world was the one that now bears his name: ‘Gaydar’ this allows a gentleman to detect, at distances of up to 100 metres (110 yards), queers, the effeminate and others who are ‘good with colors.’

Two great attributes and even a passing resemblance to Pastor Deacon Fred? So why is he riding in the cattle wagon? Simply, he was an atheist.

I am happy to report that Mrs. Norton Simon (aka actress Jennifer Jones), who I had the misfortune of serving alongside on the Board of Directors of Pasadena's Norton Simon Museum several years ago, has at last died. Alone. Of OLD AGE.

In her time away from breaking up the marriages of millionaires such as Mr. Simon and (fat, Jewish) producer David O. Selznick, the buxom Miss Jones specialized in playing tempestuous, half-breed seductresses....such as Pearl Chavez in Duel in the Sun and a Eurasian doctor (!) in Love Is a Many Splendored Thing. She was also guilty of playing a Catlick saint in The Song of Bernadette and an adulterous Parisienne in an adaptation of the (banned, filthy) book Madam Bovary.

Other roles included a female plumber in Clunny Brown, a pathological liar in Beat the Devil, and a nurse who sponged (homosexual) Rock Hudson in A Farewell to Arms.

My fondest memory of Jennifer will always be the mesmerizing grief she displayed when her own daughter threw herself from a tall building just two days after Mothers Day in 1976. This is verifiable. I have always suspected the brunch didn't go well.

Adieu, dear Jennifer. So sorry none of your 3 rich husbands can help you where you are now.
