I think the other thing our friend, Malfeitor, is missing is a sense of community.
Once a child is so far gone it is wayward and not responding to any discipline it's only a matter of time before it starts to inflict its iniquity on the community in a crime spree. There's also the powerful effect watching a disobedient child being stoned to death will have on other children thinking of back-sassing or worse. Fear is important. Let's look at some thorough Godly advice in context.
