I would like to thank MisterM for is in depth review of Portugal as a vacations spot but although he missed some issues that I would like to see discussed the flood of immoral, un-american, homo ring-kissers native to the country clarified some of my doubts.

One question if I may: Was it easy to find the McDonalds or they have only one?

I ask this because I'm thinking of going on an expedition to save as many Portuguese as I can before Rapture.

PS- I'm thinking of taking my gun with me, how much should I carry for police bribes?

First of all, do not turn this discussion in a religious one, as the true discussion is about portugal -> let me remind you of the title of it:
"Portuguese people, lazy, rude, ugly, drug selling catlics"

I will not say if god exists or not.
Actually in that matter (religion), everyone can say anything, since it is a non-verifiable area of knowledge.



On the other side, when discussing natural and social questions, no one can say whatever they want, as the answers are verifiable. It is this verifiability that allows us to learn, since the nature (I repeat, the nature) can "say" if we are close to the answers or not, simply by experimentation.

As so, when discussing anything, we should first make sure that what we are discussing is verifiable or not, otherwise we could be wasting our time.


Now: why am I stating all this? Because when discussing things in a verifiable knowledge base, we should not use non-verifiable arguments, as the ones related to religion. This will inevitably push the discussion to something unverifiable, and, thus, no one will get an answer, thus that is a waste of time, since no one will learn anything.
This is common when someone lose all his arguments in a discussion, and start arguing with unreferenced, or (this is worse) non-verifiable stuff.

As so, I only have three things to say:
1 - A few posts made from regular users in this forum clearly made that error: They answered to questions about a society, using "God's word". That is, used a non-verifiable argument. Turning it a waste of time.

2 - Every time anything is taken to an extreme, it is likely to compromise the social life.
Ill rephrase it. If someone constantly devotes too much of his time to one specific thing (let it be work, a video-game, food, religion, etc...), that someone clearly has an unhealthy behaviour.
For example: If someone sticks to a video-game for too long, he is likely to stop giving attention to other things, like family, friends, work, etc... The same holds true if an individual becomes obsessed with work...or obsessed for one particular subject.
One good indicator is when we only socialize with persons with exactly the same main-interest. For example, when we only socialize with game-lovers, or only with co-workers, etc...

I am not criticizing that, but when someone feels obsessed by one particular subject, it is important to clear the view, and see if it really is worth all that obsession, and if it is not harming his or someone's life.

This was for all you, regular users of this forum, which clearly are obsessed with it. Not to mention that a forum like this one, with this kind of posts, may suggest you are obsessed with religion. I'm not saying religion is wrong (as I said before, everyone is right about religion) what I am saying is: please take a snapshot of your life, and figure out if you are obsessed with it. One good indicator is when we only socialize with people which are strongly devoted to it.

3 - An other thing which is being taken to the extreme, is the anti-propaganda against Portugal. (finally, this thread's topic!)

First of all, please note that the development of a particular country is not directly related to the lazyness of its people.
Imagine your country has nothing but sand. How will you sell goods to other countries? It does not matter if you dig the sand harder and harder. The other countries need to be interested in buying it! And if someone gives sand for free, what will you do? The only thing you could sell is services and ideas!

Think about this, actually, this is one of the problems of the world right now, as most of the goods are bought in one single country.

Regarding the holydays trip: please note that europeans, in a general sense, have much more cultural interchange, since we have more different cultures confined in europe, than USA. Its a geographical fact. Here, with 200 euros you can go to a country which is much more different than yours, and by 500euros you can go to 5!
Moreover, with ERASMUS program, our students go study abroad for 1 year.

All this gives us two things:

- we learn that cultures are not the same. And if in our country the quality of service is proportional to its cost, in others it could not be. Moreover, sometimes the places are not as expected.
- we learn that in developed countries the best option is usually studying the country first, avoid tourist-crowded zones, and, obviously, be ready to learn a few words: at least "please" and "thank you" in local language, its very polite, and you always see a smile, which is very rewarding. Obviously if you are sociable will always learn some slang and, OC, "beer". I always try to do that

Now, if you have any problem with a trip anywhere, just remember to return to that country, because that means that you had bad luck, and ended without actually visiting it.


Anyway, I feel that users sticked to their opinion will simply ignore this post, without even questioning the ideas of it using the same types of arguments.

Well, personaly I'm not a big fan of stereotypes, but i think that something so idiotic and unbased could only come from an American website(I'm not even going to generalize this to Religion, because even though i'm an agnostic i respect Religion).

Replying to his original post, i think that if the fact that Portugal is bankrupted categorizes the portuguese people as being lazy, then the whole world is doomed, because the crisis is world-wide. That kind of typification of a characteristic can be very prejudicial to America, seeing that America constantly engages in war, conflits and horrible crimes, should i say that all americans are evil, gun-nuts, egoistic, depraved and murderous animals? I believe not.

Filthy bars and restaurants? My friend, Portugal is known as being one of the most gastronomic talented countries, attracting gastronomics worldwide.
The portuguese people is generaly very catholic, and our churches are a great arquitectual delight, so it is common for the portuguese to direct tourists to the churches when they ask what the main attractions are.

The tourism section of the NY Times considers Portugal to be a great country to visit, and most tourism magazines recommend everyone to come here, is that a coincidence?

American teens are within the world teens that most consume drugs, heavy drugs, in America i bet you can buy drugs everywhere. I've lived in Portugal for 19 years and i've never been approached by anyone asking if i wanted to buy drugs.
If you are not a drug user, then how are you so updated to weed prices? That's the only way you could have thought such a price to be over the fair taxes.

Leave the country to better people? You ignorant sad person, if it wasn't for Portugal, the modern societies would have only emerged 200 years later, because Portugal was the main discoverer, followed by Spain.
