Someone told me carpet nuking wouldn't work because Afghans can see air currents and know where to stand to avoid the fumes. Shortly after, as is often God's way, I was taken up the side of a mountain. Supposedly a pleasure jaunt but unpleasantly cold with considerable wind. As we drove along the winding road, I saw a dramatic change in trees. Great big tall specimens green and majestic alternated with about as opposite as you could get. Perhaps a map would help.

1 – Entering the windy mountain road.
2 – Quite nice trees here.
3 – Stunning tall green & majestic forest.
4 – Round the bend, horrible wizened things greet our eyes.
5 – Tall & majestic.
6 – Horrible wizened.
7 – Tall & majestic.
8 – Horrible wizened.
9, 9, 9 – Tall & majestic.
10 – Horrible wizened.

The very abrupt changes in vegetation were due to the wind, some spots being permanently sheltered and never getting any rain, others enjoying a high rainfall unlike me. I said it was a mountain road: dirt track would be closer. Some sort of forestry access I guess, “Oh let's put all the windows down and breathe some fresh mountain air!” announced my host whereupon the car filled up with wasps. “Wow!” he said. “If I drive really fast we'll blow them out!” That did actually work but our pleasure ride became more like a roller coaster with dirt and gravel flying around and the higher we got the more dismal it became until at the end [the last 10 and *] we came swooping down into the village right as the blizzard struck. Fortunately we did not sit outside eating Devonshire cream teas as planned.

Of course Devonshire teas are not paramount in the minds of Taliban goons but observation of flora, together with local knowledge, would indeed shelter them from nukes. I was very surprised how abruptly the rain shadow stopped & started. Similar to when a mountain casts a shadow in the sun: either you're in the shadow or not. And it's the same with the wind. Of course by nuking in both directions or a criss-crossed pattern, that would have been overcome so I can only assume there was another reason for not doing so.

Unfortunately, it seems like endless repetition of two notes does pass for "music" these days - "songs" of the "genre" that my late mother (condemned to the deepest pits of Hell for her wicked beliefs) used to call the "woop-woop music" - reduced not just to two notes, but also to a monotonous beat with no subtleties.
