Your math is perfect, you correctly calculated the temperature of the surface of the Sun. But the atmosphere slowly decreases with altitude and terminates at about 67 miles above the surface. This means heat through conduction or convention is impossible. Heat through radiation is how the Sun transfers energy to Earth. Heat that travels through light is affected by the inverse square law and depends not on the Sun's temperature but its overall energy output.

What I can't understand is why the sun would need to be "millions of miles away." I mean, what's the point? Who would put a sun that far away? It's like having a fire in your pool room and then sitting in the garden!

The 'point' is that life can survive on our planet. The sun is a huge nuclear fusion reactor, not a relatively harmless lump of coal conveniently sitting in the sky. If it were close to us, the least devastating effect would be the total eradication of life on earth (which will happen millions of years in the future due to the sun's life cycle causing it to expand and engulf the closest planets).

However in my limited experience, the night is not full of terrors (or anything else). This jetsam spews from yon goon whose timidity outranks the absence of human life at night (to inform us that it's dark's just so ridiculous, what 1 year old doesn't know night-time's dark? obviously no-one in the Idiocy household) and terror? I call the dark my friend. It's never changed in all my life; sure it is easier to see by day but if there's no light just feel. Works for me. Who needs light? Jesus is particularly clear on this.
